Zathura is light years better than Jumanji

And anyone who disagrees can shove their opinion right up their black hole.

I fully agree with you. I've never even seen the whole Jumanji movie, just the last 30 minutes or so, but it was pretty worthless to me. Zathura on the other hand is great!

Well the main thing where Jumanji went wrong were the horrible mechanical animals. They didn't even try to make them look real.

I think the "person lost in the game for years" was better in Jumanji. It wasn't some alternate universe, where the same person had played the game before and then got out because his younger self played the game too?? In Jumanji, if you were stuck inside the game, you were stuck inside the game. Even for 40 years. And life went on and you were gone. I thought that was a little darker, therefore better.

I don't think you can really judge a movie on the quality of its mechanical animals. Personally I found Jumanji to be a much better film, partly because it had Robin Williams but mostly because it wasn't isolated to the house. It affected the world around them and involved more characters, and was more about summoning things into the world than taking the 'players' away from it.

I know there is a certain amount of suspension of disbelief when it comes to movies like this, but Zathura really bugged me because it frankly took the piss. It had a house with holes in it floating around in space, and gravity/air/pressure/etc were completely and totally ignored. It would have bugged me age 6 so I thought it was taking a bit too much liberty with physics.

That said I just read an interesting post about the whole game being the kids imagination, which makes a whole ton of sense to me. Regardless though, I still say Jumanji is better, on pretty much every single level except the special effects.

Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

I prefer 'Jumanji' too. The special effects were good for the time and certainly better than some of the crap CGI you get in some films of today. I preferred the characters in 'Jumanji' so much more. Danny was such an annoying brat in 'Zathura' that I hated how the whole story culminated into making Walter realise how much he loves him when he was quite right that many times things went wrong, it was Danny's fault. The film might have worked better just revolving around Walter and the big sister.

I think you need to remember that Jumanji was made in 1995. That kind of CGI was pretty new.

I avoided watching Zathura all these years because everyone compared it to the abysmal Jumanji. Well finally saw Zathura last night and loved it!

Zathura is a lime Sci Fi story, but Jumanji is in teh Jungle, so much cooler an dmore oregional. Plus Zathura had tons of plot holes. See my previous post for that.

Also about the quality of Jumanji's mechanical animals.

In the Crew Commentary you can hear them discuss about the animals being made to look like they sprouted from a childs imagination and how they didn't want then to look as real as they could, cause if they did, they could just as well use real animals.

I liked Jumanji more than Zathura. And if you thought the "mechanical animals" were bad in Jumanji, what about those Zorons (or whatever they are called)? They looked terrible given the technology we have today. Very mechanical.

But, I'm not saying I didn't like Zathura. It's just that I liked Jumanji better.
