No Way Out 2004 Review

First time ive actually gotten around to watching this DVD. This show is most memorable for Eddie Guerrero pulling a major upset and winning the Smackdown championship. No Way Out is live from San Fransisco and your hosts are Michael Cole and Tazz.

First off. Let's pop over to the DVD's special section where Jamie Noble gets interviewed by Funaki on his upcoming match and Big Show does an interview and chuckles at the thought of possibly being The Giant Vs Eddie for the Smackdown title at Mania. Then it's onto the Sunday Night Heat main event pre ppv match.

Sunday Night Heat Six Man Tag

Ultimo Dragon, Billy Kidman And Paul London Vs Tajiri, Sakota and Akio

Kidman gets caught by the heels and gets beat up on their side of the ring for a moment. Sakota misses something then Kidman hottags Dragon as Tajiri tags in and Dragon opens up with the kicks. Tajiri with the handspring elbow for 2. Dragon knocks down Tajiri and goes for the asai ddt but Sakota catches him, Tajiri buzzkicks him in the head and Sakota finishes with a powerslam at 5:35. Standard stuff. 1 star.

Sable and Torrie Wilson kill the opening five minutes yakking about the recent Playboy shoot. I thought they hated eachother?

Match #1

Smackdown Tag Team Championship Handicap Match

Rikishi And Scotty 2 Hotty Vs The Basham Brothers And Shaniqua

Scotty and Danny (I think) start and Scotty ends up outside. A goofy headscissors by Scotty puts Danny in the face corner and Rikishi tags in and beats on him. Doug tries to help and gets more the same. Rikishi hiptoss and a clothesline on the Bashams. Rikishi pulls Shaniqua in but the Bashams make the save. Doug tries a headbutt and the idiot obviously hurts himself. Scotty comes in and goes for W-O-R-M but Shaniqua clotheslines him almost out of his sketchers. Bashams get a double slingshot suplex for 2. Shaniqua comes in with a slam then goes for a powerbomb or something and Scotty backdrops out and tags Rikishi. DDT on Danny and he tries to bring Shaniqua to the corner, but the Bashams slam him off the middle rope and Shaniqua gets 2. Scotty gets rid of the Bashams and Rikishi finishes Shaniqua with a samoan drop and Banzai drop at 8:16 and she may be dead. Call it 1 1/2 star.

Match #2

Blinfold Handicap Match

Jamie Noble Vs Nidia

So Nidia got blinded by Tajiri then Noble eventually went heel by using her like a tool to win matches. So now he's blindfolded and she fights him without one. Im not really interested in sitting through this. In short, Nidia makes an ass out of Noble, literally pantsing him at one point but Noble peeks from underneath the blindfold so he can slam her off the top rope and pin her at 4:23. Whatever. DUD!!!

Match #3

Tag Team Match

APA Vs The Worlds Greatest Tag Team

WGTT have new blue and gold outfits tonight. Bradshaw with the right arm wrapped in a cast basically because Benjamin injured it on the previous Smackdown. Faarooq starts with Benjamin and the APA double team shoulderblock Benjamin and Bradshaw gets a neckbreaker for 2. Haas comes in, so Bradshaw hits him with a back elbow with the bad arm and Faarooq drops an elbow for 2. He misses a charge in the corner and hits the turnbuckle with the shoulder. Haas hammerlocks and they ground Faarooq and work on the arm. Faarooq rallies with a spinebuster then hottags Bradshaw and the tag match goes out the window as everyone fights. Bradshaw tosses Haas and powerbombs Benjamin for 2. Haas posts Faarooq as Bradshaw gives Shelton the super fallaway slam and clothesline from hell for Haas but Bejamin superkicks him for the pin at 7:21. Another generic Smackdown tag match. 1 1/2 star.

Goldberg is brought in by security to his seat in the front row. Heyman and Lesnar come out and goad him into getting in the ring and he lays them out and gets arrested. Cole and Tazz for a moment come off as full blown heel announcers because Goldberg from Raw beat up the Smackdown GM and their Smackdown champ even though THEY are the definitive heels. Stupid waste of time and weird.

Match #4

Singles Match

Hardcore Holly Vs Rhyno

Holly runs in and goes after Lesnar but he gets away then he brawls with Rhyno in the entranceway. Back inside Holly gets some chops and dumps Rhyno but Rhyno drags Holly out and attacks the back. Back inside Rhyno uses a bodyscissors then a suplex for 2. Rhyno pounds away, but Holly gets a belly to back suplex to stop the momentum. Holly with a dropkick for 2. Holly goes up, gets caught and superplexed for 2. Holly gets an inverted DDT for 2. Rhyno gets a spinebuster and gore but Holly rolls out which pretty much is the tell he won't win. Holly struggles back in and gets the alabama slam almost immediately for the pin at 9:54. Didn't care for it much. 1 1/2 star.

Match #5

Cruiserweight Championship Match

Rey Mysterio w Jorge Paez Vs Chavo Guerrero w Chavo Classic

Chavo with a snapmare and he tries to tear the mask, but Rey sends him outside. Back in, Rey slugs away and gets a headscissor takedown and rollup for 2. Chavo faceplants Rey and dropkicks him for 2. Bodyslam for 2. Rey drops Chavo in the ropes and goes for 619 but Chavo senior mucks it up and Paez knocks him out then gets himself ejected in the process. Chavo check on his dad and Rey dives onto him outside. Rey rolls him in and gets the huricinrana for 2. Rey dodges a charge and rolls Chavo up for 2. They fight up top and the result is Chavo getting that ugly gutbuster that can wreck a persons leg as well as break the ribs of whoever your doing it to. Chavo attacks the ribs and the abdominal stretch. Chavo with a modified halfcrab and they do some luchadore counter pin spots finishing with Rey getting a sunset flip for 2 then Rey runs into a tiltawhirl gutbuster for 2. Chavo gets another abdominal stretch on the mat, but Rey escapes with the a bulldog for 2. Rey gets a leg lariat and uses a headscissors to post Chavo. Rey pulls out a stroke for 2. They duel on the apron and Rey ddt's him on the apron itself. Missed crossbody and Chavo gets a front suplex for 2. They go up and Rey fights him off and a moonsault gets 2. Chavo counters next with a gory bomb for 2. Rey with a rana and hits the 619 but when he goes to drop the dime Chavo rolls through to counter into a half crab, NICE! Rey makes the ropes. Rey takes control again and goes up top but Chavo Sr shows up and knocks him off so Chavo can roll him up and win the title at 17:21. Best match of the night so far, but the ending kinda hurt it. Call it 3 stars.

Match #6

Triple Threat #1 Contenders Match

Kurt Angle Vs The Big Show Vs John Cena

Show tosses Angle around and Cena mocks them. Cena gets beat on next then Angle and Cena do a mini match. Angle with the overhead suplex for 2. Show pounds on Angle and tosses Cena, then goes back to work on Angle. Sideslam for 2. Cena comes back in, and Show slams him and delivers a headbutt. Legdrop, but Angle grabs him from outside and tries to suplex him off the apron, which doesn't work of course because he's too big and nobody is crazy enough to take a bump like that, and it just looks like Angle is humping him. Show gives him a get off my back lowblow and then brawls with Cena outside. Back inside Angle with rollingg german suplexes on Cena for 2. Show breaks it up and then hiptosses Cena and steps on the bad knee. Suplex for 2. Cena dodges a charge and dropkicks the knee to come back. Cena with an elbow and and gets a missle dropkick, that was kinda unigue of Kurt. Cena throws him and and FU's Show, but Angle breaks up the pin, so Cena DDTs him. Angle dumps Cena and goes after Show with an angle sSlam, but only for 2. Cena goes for the FU on Angle, but he reverses to the anklelock, Show breaks it up with a chokeslam on Angle. Cena rolls up Show for 2. Show chokeslams him for 2. Angle breaks that up with an anklelock, but Show shoves him off. Cena hits Angle with a spinebuster and five knuckle shuffle, but Show clips him to break up the FU atttempt. Show slams him into the corner to hurt the knee, but Angle gives Show and angle slam to the floor then slaps the anklelock on Cena who taps almost immediately at 12:18 and Angle is the #1 contender for the Smackdown title at Mania 20. Super Cena was a few years away still. Im going 2 1/2 stars.

Match #7

Smackdown Championship Match

Brock Lesnar Vs Eddie Guerrero

Watching Eddie wrestle from this time period, I notice that he had some noticeable bacne going on, and they claimed he had been clean for years but I still believe he was on the juice till the end, his pyshique was much more roided than his early WCW days also. Brock overpowers Eddie easily and pounds on him in the corner BIG backdrip. Snap suplex, but Eddie slugs back and Brock knees him down and blocks a rana with a spinning powerbomb. Overhead suplexes and Brock gets a high knee in the corner and another overhead suplex that puts Eddie on the floor. Eddie trips him up and wraps the leg against the post. Brock uses the fisherman buster to take over again. He grabs a sleeper, but Eddie escapes and gets presslamed for his effort. He escapes that too and clips Brock, but Brock waylays him with a clothesline. He follows with a weak german suplex. Brock charges Eddie in the corner but misses and rams his knee into the turnbuckle. Eddie works on the knee and hits a backdrop suplex. Brock starts choking him on the mat but Eddie counters into an STF. Brock powers out, so Eddie rams the knee into the mat and goes back to work on it. Eddie goes for a modified leglock but Brock fights him off. Brock gets a suprise belly to belly suplex. He tries a vertical suplex, but Eddie counters with a headscissors and dropkicks the knee. Eddie to the figure four and the crowd errupts. Brock makes the ropes, however. Eddie goes right back to the knee and goes into a half crab, and follows with another STF. Brock powers out again. Brock comes back with another german suplex, then splatters Eddie with a spinebuster for only 2. Brock goes to the chickenwing on the mat and turns into it into a sleeper. Eddie makes the ropes to break. Eddie heads up top but Brock sidesteps the missle dropkick attempt. Brock favoring the leg noticeablly now. He's got a busted nose too. Brock then commands on the mat with amateur stuff and Eddie uses a headbutt to breakout, then once again dropkicks the knee again and takes Brock down with a headscissors. Brock misses a charge and Eddie comes back with the triple vertical suplexes and goes up, but misses the frog splash. F5, but the ref gets bumped by Eddie's feet in the process so there's nobody to count. Brock has had enough, he goes out for the title and plans on whacking Eddie good but Goldberg makes the run in and spears Brock. Pretty piss poor police officers in San Fran if one guy could fight them off and make his way back into the arena to attack somebody. Eddie only gets 2 off it and I bet alot of people were going OHHHHH at that moment. Eddie grabs the title and takes a wild swing, misses and Brock goes for the F-5 but Eddie pulls out my fav spot of the match, he counters the F-5 into a tornado ddt RIGHT ON THE BELT that happened to just fall in the right spot by sheer fate. Eddie goes up top and hits the frogsplash to win his first and only Heavyweight championhip and the growd goes nuts at an impressive 30:07. Awesome way to end the show and I think alot of people were shocked they actually gave him the belt. YOU KNOW if it was HHH he wouldn't of done the right thing like Brock without keeping his "heat" somehow. Im only knocking off 1/2 star for Goldberg running interference. Best WWE ppv match of 2004 at that time I think. 4 1/2 stars.

Overall Opinion: The undercard up until the last 3 matches was typical generic Thursday night Smackdown fluff but the final 3 matches helped pick up the final score in a big way.

Final Score: This show gets a 5.3 star rating from me out of a perfect 10.0. It was sucking in the beginning but the cruiserweight match helped bring up that score then the main event stole the show.
