No Mercy 2003 Review


This show took place on Oct 19th 2003 and was part of the Smackdown promotion. Cole and Tazz on commentary.


Match #1

Cruiserweight Championship Match

Tajiri Vs Rey Mysterio


Cruiserweight countering stuff to start. Tajiri tries a suplex and Rey avoids it but gets armdragged instead. Tajiri goes for the handspring elbow but Rey knocks him outside. Rey hits a pescado, back inside Rey tries something on the top rope but gets crotched. Tajiri works the arm kicks Rey down on the mat. Rey fights back with the springboard wristlock, but Tajiri stops him with a spinkick for 2. Back to the arm, and a kick to the shoulder gets 2. Rey gets a suprise tornado ddt for 2. Cross body gets 2. Crucifix into a sunset flip, but Tajiri blocks for 2, and Rey reverses that for 2. Tajiri catapults Rey over the top, but he hangs on and pulls Tajiri out with a headscissors. He follows with a rana off the apron. Back in, Rey misses a springboard, and Tajiri tosses him, but Rey reverses the momentum into a 619. West Coast Pop is blocked with a powerbomb for 2. I thought that was it there. Rey reverses him into the corner and charges, then Tajiri alleyoops him up to the top rope and Rey hits a moonsault for 2. Tajiri gets the Tarantula, but Rey ducks the Big Kick and he knocks down Tajiri and gets off a seated dropkick. Rey sets him up for the west coast pop but Tajiri's new buddies Sakota and Akio and they get ejected and in the confusion Tajiri gets off a buzz saw kick and pins Rey at 11:40. Good opener. Weak ending. 3 stars.


Match #2

Singles Match

Chris Benoit Vs A-Train


A-Train controls first and Benoit bails. They try a lockup and Train sends him flying outside. Back in, Benoit chops and tries the german suplexes but gets roughed up in the corner. Benoit fights back, but runs into an elbow. They slug it out in the corner and Train misses a charge and Benoit chops away. Train clubs him down, then a splash for 2. Benoit takes him down into the corner, but walks into a bicycle kick that gets 2 for Train. Train gets off a nasty foward butterfly suplex into what appeared to be a shoulder breaker or actually dropped Benoit face first accross the knee. Benoit is bleeding a bit from the mouth, real or not? Benoit goes for the knee, but Train clubs him down again. Train tries a surfboard but Benoit gets a ddt. Train reverses a suplex attempt into his own german suplex, and they fight outside. Train throws him to the guardrail and back inside. Train fetches a chair but Benoit stops him short. Ugly spot as Train presses Benoit and he accidently steps on the chair and loses his balance and Benoit almost goes down headfirst on the chair but gets more of the shoulder on the way down. Train sets up the chair in the corner, but Benoit gets the crossface. Train fights up, so Benoit hits him with the rolling germans. Benoit goes up and gets slammed off, and Train clotheslines him before going up. He changes his mind and gets the Derailer for 2. Benoit doesn't sell it very long. Benoit in the corner and Train charges with a boot and gets tangled in the chair and Benoit pulls him off and slaps on the sharpshooter to win at 12:19. Pretty good. 2 1/2 stars.


Match #3

Singles Match

Matt Hardy w Shanon Moore Vs Zach Gowen


I think Zack was on his way out by this point. Matt with a bodyslam and puts him on top, but Gowen comes down with a bulldog for 2. Shannon trips him up and Matt stomps away and works him over in the corner, then hits a corner clothesline, and a clothesline puts Zach on the floor. Matt steps on his head and brings him in. Legdrop gets 2. Vertical suplex then a surfboard, but Zach fights out. Matt goes up and misses a moonsault, and Zach comes back with a dropkick that puts Matt on the floor, and Gowen follows with a somersault plancha. Back in, high cross gets 2. He walks into the Side Effect and Matt gets 2. Zach goes up and gets crotched, and Matt tries to bring him down with a superplex, but Gowen knocks him off and gets the moonsault for the pin at 5:31. Standard Smackdown stuff. 1 1/2 star.


Match #4

Tag Team Match

APA Vs The Basham Brothers


Bradshaw starts beating on Doug I think then Doug fights back. Faarooq in and they kill him. Danny in and they beat on Faarooq and he gets a powerslam on Doug and knocks Danny down, and the APA get the double spinebuster. Bradshaw drops an elbow for 2, and the APA get a double shoulderblock for 2. Danny gets a jawbreaker on Faarooq. Doug comes in, but gets whomped on the floor by Bradshaw. Back in, Faarooq with the Dominator attempt, but the Bashams sneak in with a doublesuplex that gets 2 for Danny. They work Faarooq over in the corner and get another doublesuplex, and that gets 2 for Danny again. Back to the corner, as Doug switches in and goes for a chinlock. Faarooq fights out, but Danny stops him. Back to the chinlock, but Faarooq escapes and gets a spinebuster. Hot tag Bradshaw and he kicks ass, powerbombs Doug for 2, tosses Doug and gets the super fallaway slam on Danny, and another one on Doug. Shaniqua makesa suprise return and whacks Bradshaw so Doug can get the pin at 8:54. Typical Smackdown Tag. 1 star.


Match #5

Father Daughter Submission Match

Vince McMahon Vs Stephanie McMahon


I can't watch this ****. I LOATHED this story back in the day and it was the big story for Smackdown post Summerslam really. I FF through most of it. Vince does some stuff, Steph does some stuff........Cole talks about how horrible Vince is to the family...blah,blah,blah. Sable interferes for Vince. Linda tries to help out and the whole thing bores me. Vince gets a steel rod from somehwere and chokes Steph until Linda throws the towel in for a submission at 9:21. DUD!!! Im suprised they didn't give this crap second from the top on the card.

Singles Match

Kurt Angle Vs John Cena


Angle takes Cena down with an armdrag, but Cena grabs a headlock and takes over, Kurt comes back with a series of armdrags. Angle punches away in the corner, but Cena catches him with a clothesline for 2. Angle backdrops him for 2. Angle with a shoulderblock in the corner and starts chopping, but misses a charge and hits the post, and falls outside. Cena sends him back in and gets a corner clothesline, and a neckbreaker for 2. He stomps away and elbows him down for 2. Into a double chickenwing on the mat and Angle is bleeding from the mouth. Cena backdrop suplex for 2. Into the facelock, but Angle fights out and slugs away. He walks into a spinebuster however and that gets 2 for Cena. Cena goes up, but gets caught with the possum superplex, but Cena shoves him off and jumps off and gets dropkicked in the knee on the way down. Can't remember the last time I saw Angle do a dropkick. Angle gets a flying forearm and clotheslines to make the comeback. Russian legsweep gets 2. Angle goes for the anklelock, but Cena makes the ropes, so Angle baseball slides him to the floor. Back in, Cena catches him with a necksnap and they slug it out on the apron, where Angle tries a german suplex off the apron towards the tables which would of killed both guys dead obviously, so Cena counters and gets a nasty ddt on the apron and you can hear Angle smack on the canvas on the way down. Angle comes in, but gets caught with a guillotine legdrop coming in, which gives Cena 2. Angle comes back with the rolling germans, but Cena dropkicks the knee, then the throwbackto the for 2. Blind charge misses and Angle rolls him up for 2. More germans from Angle get 2. Angle slugs away in the corner, but Cena goes for a piledriver, but Angle keeps dropping down to block. Cena does that ugly powerbomb in the corner and only 2 1/2. FU gets 2. Another one is countered to the Angle Slam, and that gets 2. Cena grabs the chain, but it’s just a distraction while he uses Angle’s medals, and that gets 2. Another FU is reversed to a backslide for 2. Angle Slam is reversed to another FU, but Angle reverses to the anklelock for the submission at 18:27. Best match of the night 3 1/2 stars.


Match #7

United States Championship Match

Eddie Guerrero Vs The Big Show


Eddie has bandage patches all over his back from being put through his lowrider windshield earlier in the week by Show. Eddie goes after the knee to start, and Show overpowers and Eddie gets dropped. Show headbutts him down and walks over him. Eddie dodges a charge and pulls Show out of the ring, then distracts the ref with a chair before using a garbage can lid on him. Show gets mad and Eddie runs outside and gets posted by Show. Show tosses him back in and sits on his back, and uses a chinlock. Show keeps pounding the back and he removes a turnbuckle pad and ropes Eddie into it. Eddie fights back and the ref gets bumped, so Eddie pulls an weapon object out of his tights, nailing Show with it. That gets 2. Eddie grabs the title and puts Show down with it, setting up the frog splash for 2. Eddie charges and runs into a spinebuster, which gets 2. Show chokeslams him for 2. Another one is blocked with a low blow, and Eddie DDTs him for 2. Another chokeslam finishes at 11:27. Show did next to nothing with the belt. 2 stars.


Match #8

Smackdown Championship Chain On A Pole Match


Brock Lesnar Vs The Undertaker


Undertaker goes for the arm, and they fight in the corner. Brock misses a charge and Taker works the arm again, but Brock slugs out of that and hammers him in the corner. Taker boots him, and the legdrop gets 2. Taker with the ropewalk which gets 2. They brawl out and Taker elbows him off the apron, but Brock fires back with knees to the gut and sends UT into the stairs. Back in, Brock gets a fisherman suplex for 2. Brock slowly stomps him in the corner, but Taker fights back, only to miss a charge to the corner and Brock stomps him down. Taker necksnaps him, but Brock sends him into the railing and they fight on the floor. Back in, Taker catches him with an elbow, and the flying clothesline for 2. Brock comes back with a knee to the gut, but Taker hotshots him. Taker goes for the chain and the lights go out, but nothing happens. Brock powerslams Taker. Brock brings the stairs in, but Taker headbutts him and stomps away in the corner. Brock whips him into the stairs however. Taker comes back and clotheslines Brock to the floor, where he piledrives him on the remaining half of the stairs. Taker climbs for the chain again, but Brock stops him. Brock goes low, and uses the stairs for 2. Another charge with the stairs, but UT boots him down again and charges with them. Brock ducks and the stairs end up on the floor again, and Brock pounds UT with shoulders in the corner. He goes for the chain, but Taker brings him down with an attempt at the Last Ride, which Brock counters with a clothesline. Taker gets the corner clothesline, setting up Snake Eyes and a big boot. Brock counters the chokeslam with a spinebuster. Taker gets the triangle choke but Brock counters. Clothesline from Brock, but Taker catches him with the dragon sleeper. Brock counters to the F5, which gets 2. Brock goes for the chain again, but Taker chokeslams him from the top. Taker climbs for the chain, but the FBI run in and attack him. He disposes of them and then gives Brock the last ride and does the tope con hilo onto the FBI outside. Nunzio tries to get the chain and gets sent to the floor by Taker who finally gets the chain, but Vince McMahon comes out and shoves him off the top, allowing Brock to use the chain for the pin at 24:16. Usual boring overbooked loss for Taker. The guy seems to only lose where he has to fight off an entire army. 2 stars.


Overall Opinion: An okay ppv. Totally forgotten by the next night but it's not terrible.
