Confused about Kelly saving the pension checks to a special account

I don't understand how Kelly saving his pension checks for Evelyn was such a great gift. Wouldn't they have needed that money to live on for the years he was retired before he died? They didn't have a different income, what did they do?

Evidently they had ten successful children. i'm sure the kids would have helped out.. I assume the house was all paid for and Kelley drew social security AND a pension check. I wouldn't think two modest living senior citizens would need too much so considering all that it could be that Kelley was able to feather a relatively soft spot for his wife in case of his own early exit from this world. He did drink and fight and carry anger and stress.. that'll kill ya

Evelyn didn't work. I would assume after Kelly died the pension checks would stop and so would his social security. She would get only a fraction of what his social security was as his wife. She never worked so would not get any social security of her own based on employement. So her only income would be from those pension checks.
