TMOOD - The continuing Story

New Beginnings

Livy’s baby was a healthy baby boy born in their home. They named him Daniel in honor of Ray’s brother who had died at Pearl Harbor. Daniel’s birth was celebrated by all of Ray’s family. Livy called her sister, Abbey, with the good news and Abbey was very happy for them. During that conversation, Abbey related that she was getting worried about Kent. His letters were no longer light and pleasant but were darker and almost foreboding. Livy consoled her, telling Abbey that things will work out. At church, Livy asked for a special prayer for her brother-in-law, Kent.

For the Singletons, Daniel’s first week was a wonderful, busy time. Ray and Livy were so busy that they didn’t have much time to talk until several days later. On the weekend following Daniel’s birth, the pace slowed down to the routine of caring for Danny, farm chores and house hold chores. Saturday evening, Ray and Livy were ready to turn in for the night. They had not changed their sleeping arrangements. Livy was in the upstairs bedroom with the baby and Ray was in the bunk room.

Livy: “Could we talk for a while upstairs? There is something I want to tell you. Daniel is asleep in his cradle. We’ll be careful not to wake him. Pause - Ray, when I first came here, I felt that being here was my father’s punishment. I also felt that I wasn’t what I should be.”

Ray: “Livy, from the first day, in my heart and in my mind, you were pure as the driven snow. I felt that you were entitled to all of the respect and honor I could give. I believe that our marriage was a fresh, clean start for both of us. My family has felt the same way right from the beginning! I adore you and so do they.”

Livy: “I know that and I want to express to you how much that has helped me!” How much you have helped me! From the very beginning, you showered me with kindness, understanding and you were so loving. You gave me the freedom to go where I wanted. I was not able to return your kindness and love then. Every day, you were so kind and gentle and loving and you did not give up on me! I kept this wall around myself against you. In the beginning, I was writing letters to the father of my baby in the hope that he would rescue me from what I thought of as my punishment here! Slowly , I came to realize that this was not a punishment but an opportunity. A chance for a new life with a man who is the most kind, gentle and loving I have ever known. You have shown your love in so many ways while receiving nothing in return from me! You have cared enough to listen to me and to try to make things better for my sake! No other man has ever done that for me! For my part, I continued to keep my distance from you even after my feelings toward you were warming. I’m not sure why. Maybe, I thought it was too good to be true! When you told me that you loved me and my baby on that day and gave me the ring, I dared to hope that this could work! Ray, you have taught me a lot about love that is freely given in the last seven months. Thank you for believing in me and not giving up on me! Any other man would have given up long ago! After Daniel was born, your loving way with him let me know for sure that your love is true and that with you, Daniel and I will be loved and protected. You are a good and loving man, Ray and I love you so much! You are my hero and I am yours!

Ray, loudly and excitedly, jumping up!: “Ya Hoo!” I love you Livy! Does this mean you are going to stay for sure? Livy had not to this time fully communicated her desire to stay permanently.
The baby is awakened by Ray’s yell and begins to cry. Both Ray and Livy put Daniel back to sleep.
After the baby is asleep again, they continue quietly.

Livy: “Ray, where you are, I want to be! You are the most loving, wonderful man I have ever known!!”

Ray: “You have made me the happiest man alive from the first day you came. You are the best thing that has ever happened to me, Livy! I love you!”

They embrace in a long kiss.
Pause.

Ray: “Do you remember in the beginning when you asked me why I agreed to this marriage?”

Livy: “Yes, I do.”

Ray: “I told you that I believed that it was God’s will for us. That is only one of the reasons, though. The other reason I agreed to this marriage was that I had this dream of being married to a beautiful woman who would deeply love me. I also dreamed that this woman and I had children and I was a good father. I have also prayed about this for a long time and believed that I could be a good husband and father for a long time. I saw no opportunity to make this dream come true, though. That is, until Pastor Case talked to me about you. When I first saw you, I couldn’t believe how fine and beautiful you were. You far surpassed anything I could imagine in any dream. I think I loved you and wanted you from the very first day!”

Livy: “That is really beautiful, Ray! Thank you for telling me that!”

Ray: “I’ve been thinking that we should agree on some things.
First, we hold absolutely nothing from each other. We share everything between us openly ; no secrets. We are not two separate people anymore! Pause.

Second, if there are any angry feelings that happen during any day, we talk it out and forgive each other before the end of that day. Pause.

Third, we let absolutely nothing come between us. Not family, not children, nothing! Pause.
What do you think, Livy?” Ray is smiling, waiting for Livy’s response.

Livy, with a warm smile: “Yes, I agree, but there is one more I would like to add. We sleep together, never in separate bedrooms from now on. I love you Ray! You know, it is wonderfully exhilarating to finally be saying that to you! Plan to hear me say that often!”

Livy: Now that we are going to be totally open with each other, I have to tell you about something that happened with the truck last Saturday. As you know, I went to see the girls. Florie also wanted me to meet a friend of hers, Walter. They wanted to go for a ride, so the women got into the cab of the truck and Walter was in back. I recognized Walter as one of the POWs. I dropped the girls off and drove Walter to our house. I gave him an opportunity to steal the truck which was out of gas and also one of your suits. He stole the truck and I then called the police so that he would be captured. What I was burning when you arrived was a locket from Edward because I then knew that of my life was over and Walter’s uniform. I’m sorry! I will be more careful in the future.

Ray: It sounds to me as though your friends tried to fool you. They put you in danger! You were very resourceful in the way you solved the problem. It was really risky, don’t you think? The German could have hurt you! But I guess all’s well that ends well!

Ray: “I love you, Livy! Plan to hear that often! We should get some sleep before Daniel wakes up for his midnight feeding! Good night.”

Livy: “Good night, sweet prince!”
They embrace on the bed and fall asleep in each other’s arms.

Ray, Livy and Daniel are in church the next day, Sunday, for Daniel’s baptism. Pastor Case baptizes Daniel with Martha and Hank also standing up as Daniel’s God-parents. After the service, all of the church members congratulate the new parents and offer their support to Ray and Livy. Church is followed by Dinner at Hank & Martha’s house. Martha’s daughter, Ruth, volunteers to take care of Daniel while Livy help’s Martha in the kitchen. Hank and Ray are talking in the living room. The boys are out playing.

Livy: Do you remember that night before Thanksgiving when I came over and told you about the letters?

Martha: “Yes, I do.”

Livy: “You asked me how I felt about Ray. I wasn’t sure then. Things are much clearer now. I love him so much and I feel very fortunate that he feels the same about me! A lot has changed in a short time. I very much want to please him and there is one area where I am particularly weak. Could you help me with something?

Martha: I have prayed that it would work out for you two! What do you need help with?

Livy: Ray thinks I am a pitiful cook and he’s right. I have found that being a good cook is so much more than following directions in a recipe book. Would you teach me how to cook for a family? Your meals are always so well planned and delicious. Maybe I could work with you as you prepare meals in order to get better at it. We could get to know each other more at the same time.

Martha: I think we can start right now. And maybe Ray and you could come over on Wednesday nights and also Sundays for dinner. We’ll cook together on those days. In between, you can practice on him.

Livy: You are such a kind and giving person. I wanted to also thank you for all of the support you freely gave to me from the time I arrived. I can’t express to you how much that has meant to me!”

Martha: “You are family!”

The dinner was enjoyed by all. Ray has been learning about the Anasazi civilization in Colorado and cliff dwellings in New Mexico. He has read about that in a book he got from the library and mentions that he and Livy may be visiting some of those sites next summer. The conversation then turned to the discussion about the latest happenings in the war. There has been more good news seeming to indicate that the War could end soon. And, of course, there was conversation about the plan for next year’s crops. After the pleasant visit with Hank and Martha’s family, Ray, Livy and Daniel climb into their truck for the return home. Daniel is asleep in Livy’s arms.

She asks Ray: “Ray, at church this morning, it seemed that everyone in the congregation was so supportive and kind. They offered so much support. In my father’s church, a baptism primarily involved the immediate family of the child. The expression of congregational support was there but it was not nearly as personal as I saw today. Why is there so much more support in this church?”

Ray: “Ours is a small church. It is small enough that all of the members know each other quite well. People recognize that they need each other out here. Do you remember my answer when you asked why there wouldn’t be any talk about the birth date?”

Livy: “Yes, I do!”

Ray: “Well, has there been any talk?”

Livy: “No, not that I know of.”

Ray: “Everyone in our congregation wants the best for every other member. Each member feels a responsibility to other members of the congregation. The children of the congregation are watched over and cared about by all of the members. Danny will have many people who care about him and will be watching over him!”

Livy was silent, thinking about what Ray had said. If what he said was true, this was an excellent place to bring up Danny.

After returning home and while Livy was putting Danny to bed, Ray wrote some words down on a piece of colored paper. These words had been in his mind all day. He put the paper in his pocket. This love note was the first of the thousands he would write to her in their future years together. It read.

“You saved me from a life empty,
And filled my life with possibility,
You made my greatest dream come true,
When you told me, “I LOVE YOU”!

Livy, I Love You!
I’ll be thinking of you all day, every day!

Ray was up Monday morning long before Livy because Livy had had a difficult night with Daniel the night before. Livy awoke to find Ray’s note pinned to his pillow. She was deeply touched by those words of love and realized how much she was blessed to have this man, her husband. She was also impressed that Ray could write something so simple and yet so sweet. When Ray came in for breakfast, Livy made the best meal she could and she made Ray feel very much appreciated starting with a long embrace and kiss.

Livy made the plaque to be hung above the head of their bed that day in between caring for Daniel. She used a picture frame. Instead of a picture, she inserted a piece of parchment paper she had gotten in town containing the words she wrote using the calligraphy she had learned long ago. The hanging read.

- No Secrets
- Forgive Before Night
- Nothing Comes Between Us
- No Separate Bedroom

May Our Love Flourish Always!

She presented it to Ray that night and together they placed it on the wall in its intended place above the headboard of their bed.

A Christmas to Remember

The December days went by quickly for Livy. She was so busy caring for Daniel and learning to cook. Daniel was a calm baby, making Livy’s job easier.

For Ray, December was also busy. He worked at the beet factory and did a great deal of interior home improvements. Livy kept a list of things needing attention to make their home more comfortable. Ray used that list to define the home improvements he would make.

Livy and Ray worked together on preparations for Daniel’s first Christmas and played with Daniel in the evenings.

Two weeks before Christmas on Saturday, Ray took Livy and Daniel out to the woods to find their Christmas tree. This would be Ray’s first Christmas tree since his parents had died. All of the Christmases since had been spent with Martha’s family. He was pleased at the prospect of again having Christmas in the home of his youth! The tree they found was a beautifully shaped, but small spruce. It was about six feet tall! They cut the spruce down and loaded it in the “Beet Box”, Ray’s truck. That evening, during Daniel’s nap, Ray and Livy looked together in the attic of their home for the old Christmas decorations Ray thought were there. They found the lights and ornaments used the last time long ago. As they unpacked them, Ray remembers the warmth of Christmases past in that house so long ago. Ray had gone to town the previous week and had purchased an Angel for the top of the tree. He had intended that he would give it to Livy as a pre-Christmas gift when they decorated the tree.

When the ornaments and the lights were all on the tree except for the tree top decoration, Ray plugged the lights in and they both sat together admiring the tree and sharing the feeling of warmth and love. Ray poured some champagne which he had purchased earlier and raised a toast to their future together. The pine smell, the candle light, the tree, the gentle snow that had begun outside and the wine completed the picture.

Ray then presented a carefully wrapped package to her. She unwrapped it and saw the Angel inside. The porcelain angel was inscribed on the bottom of the skirt with the following words.

“For Livy, the Angel of my life. 1944”

Ray: In this world, there is no one more important to me than you. If this tree represents my world, the angel belongs at the very top! You are that angel! I will always love you, honey! Every Christmas from now on, we will be reminded when this angel is put on the top of the Christmas tree of the love we feel at this moment!

Livy, with tears streaming down her cheeks: “Oh, Ray, the angel is so beautiful but the symbolism behind it is even more beautiful. I love you!”

They hug and kiss, feeling the fullness of the moment. Later, he carried her up to their room where Daniel was asleep.

The following Saturday, Ray and Livy traveled to La’Junta for a Christmas shopping trip. It was the week before Christmas. Ray’s sister agreed to take Danny for the day. The drive to La’Junta was very pleasant as the morning sun shown brightly causing the snow crystals in the fields to glisten like stars. Livy and Ray talked about Danny’s future.

Ray: “Danny is going to be blessed. He has a smart, educated mamma and a father who knows how to work hard. I can teach him to be a good, hard working honorable man. You can give him the gift of your refinement and your thirst for learning and knowledge. With that combination, he will be a great man some day. Do you think that we should start saving for his college education?

Livy: “Absolutely! How do you think we should start?”

Ray: “Maybe, we could start a savings account in Daniels name and put a few dollars a month into it for him. Why don’t we start it today?”

Livy: “Yes!”

Ray: “There is another thing we should agree on. I have been thinking about this for quite some time.
I am going to make sure, the Lord willing, that Daniel will grow up close to me, his father! I don’t think it would help Daniel to know that I am not his natural father! I would give anything to be his natural father! I know I couldn’t love him any more than I do! Could we just bury the circumstances leading up to Daniel’s birth?”

Livy: “I am touched that you would even think about that! Even in this, you are showing your love for me and for Danny! I agree with you! Danny will be blessed to know a man like you as his father!”

Livy: “On another subject, I have been talking to my sister. What do you think of spending Christmas here with you sister and her family and then visiting my sister in Denver before Easter, probably in Late March. She is growing very lonely and she tells me that she hasn’t talked to Dad very much! Also, she is very worried about Kent. He isn’t writing as often as he had been. I would really enjoy spending some time there with my sister, maybe a weekend. I am also hoping that I can somehow spend some time with my Dad! Maybe things can somehow be made right between my Dad and I. I miss him! We wouldn’t go on Easter as that is always a very busy time for Dad.”

Livy has been closely communicating with her sister in Denver by letter and telephone. It has saddened Livy that her father has not contacted her even once since he sent her away. She felt afraid to initiate communications for fear of being rejected. Abbey’s increasing worry about her husband, Kent, also has made Livy feel that she should be there for Abbey.

Ray: “That should work out well. Sounds like a plan to me. I would like to see where you grew up. That would make me feel even more connected to you. The weather should be warmer by then, too! We will take the train.”

At La’junta, Livy and Ray shopped together for all the family, her side and his. Together, they picked out an ornament for their son, Danny. It was a Hallmark, labeled “First Christmas 1944”. When all of the gifts had been purchased, there was still enough money to enjoy a lunch together. It has been a long time since Livy has been in a restaurant and she greatly enjoys it. After lunch, they opened an account at the bank for Daniel’s education with a few dollars.

Ray: Livy, we’ll put in as much as we can each month. By the time Danny is old enough for college, there should be plenty.”

Livy: “Danny will have opportunity! Let’s go home, I miss him!”

Finally the day is at hand. Its Christmas Eve. Livy is preparing the feast this year. It is her first time entertaining and also planning and preparing a meal for more than two people. Hank, Martha and their family will be joining Ray, Livy and Daniel. Martha will assist but Livy has planned and prepared the meal. Ray offers to help set everything up and Livy gratefully accepts his offer. They work together getting everything ready, putting the finishing touches on the table and the decorations. Livy is serving a ham dinner, a tradition in her family for Christmas Eve. At Two O’clock, Hank, Martha and family arrive. Martha and Ruth help Livy in the kitchen. The men retire to the living room to talk and the boys play outside.

Martha: “Everything really looks so good.”

Livy: “Thank you for all the time you spent this last month teaching me to cook!”

Livy: “Its good to see you, Ruth, how is school going?”

Ruth: “Its going very well.”

The meal was served and all agreed that everything was extremely tasty. Ray expressed how proud he was of Livy for this accomplishment and says, “Now that my wife is a great cook, I will probably have to start watching my weight.” All laugh. Livy, beaming, thanks Martha for helping her.
She says: “After all, I learned from an excellent cook and baker!”

Christmas Eve, after Daniel is asleep and the clean-up is finished, Ray and Livy exchange gifts and share a close time together. Ray gives Livy a subscription to the “National Geographic”.

Ray: “I know that you will sometimes be thinking about those far away places. I want to know more about them, too!” I promise you that some day, I will take you to some of those places!”

Livy: “Thank you, Ray! Please know that I want to be with you where ever you are!”

Livy then presented Ray with his gift. It is an ornament of a knight on a white horse inscribed, “To Ray, my knight in shining armor.”

Livy: “You saved me when no one else would. You will always be my hero! My knight in shining armor!”

Ray: “That is so beautiful! Thank you, Livy! I will always try to live up to that!”

Livy: “You already have!”

Ray: “I have one more gift for you. Close your eyes and give me your left hand. Ray pulled the wedding band which matched the engagement ring he had given her a month ago out of his pocket. The inscription read “For Olivia, Whose Love I Cherish” The wedding band and the engagement ring were a set made to latch together. He kissed her hand and then in a smooth motion slipped the wedding band into position next to the engagement ring and both rings fit together.”

Livy opened her eyes and seeing the matching ring, kissed Ray thank you.

Ray: “ There is an inscription on the inside of the ring, see it?”

Livy: “That is so beautiful. I love you!”

Then she said, “I have something else for you, too!”

Livy had purchased a wedding band for Ray and had it inscribed, “For Ray, My Hero, My Love”.

She had Ray give her his left hand and then put the ring on his finger.

Livy: “These rings are symbols of the bond between us. We will be strong together.”

Ray: “Every time I look at my hand, I will be thinking of you!”

They enjoy the moment together, appreciating each other for a while before retiring for the evening.
The next morning, its Christmas. Ray, Livy and Daniel attend church and then go over to Martha’s for dinner. After the meal, they all exchanged gifts and then Ray and Livy returned home with Danny.

The Gathering Storm

After Christmas and New Years, the bleak month of January began. Livy was beginning to find it difficult to fight a deep feeling of sadness and anguish. On the surface, she tried to remain happy for Daniel and Ray’s sake. Finally, one January night, Ray heard her crying in her sleep. He gently awakened her and asked what was wrong.

Livy: “I can’t explain it. I just feel that everything is wrong. My mind tells me that I have so much to be thankful for and yet I feel empty and desolate somehow! I have you, I have a beautiful son, I have your family, I have my sister! I don’t know why I feel like this!

Ray: “I think I know some of it. Think about it! These thing all happened in the last eighteen months. - You cared for your Mother and then she passed away. You reached out to someone who was not honorable and he deserted you. Your Father rejected you and banished you to a strange place! You were sent to a wedding in the presence of strangers! You gave birth! Any one of these things by itself would be a test for most any woman! But you, you came through it all with strength and dignity! I admire you! If you feel sad, you are entitled to your feelings! I will support you! What can I do to help?”

Livy: “I don’t know. Just being there is enough. Just understanding when I may be short tempered is enough!”

Ray: “We’ll see this thing through together. You are not alone! Whatever hurts you, hurts me! Do you remember that night before Thanksgiving when you had the nightmare? I so much wanted to hug you and comfort you and help you feel that everything would be alright then, but I couldn’t because I didn’t know how you would respond to that. Since then, I have felt I let you down that time. I have saved that hug and I have it for you now. Ray put his arm around her and held her close. Pause
Livy, you are surrounded by people who love you! My family all love you! I love you! Your family loves you! Your Dad will come around, you’ll see! You had to have been the apple of his eye, I know that you are the apple of mine!”

Livy: “Thank you, Ray!”

They hug and return to sleep as the next day will start early.

That day, Ray visited his sister. He wanted to understand more about women’s feelings, especially after a pregnancy.

Ray: Sis, I need to ask you a question. Do you have some time?
Martha: “Sure, Ray. What is it?

Ray, having difficulty bringing this subject up: “Livy is starting to have these sad feelings and I don’t know what to do about it. Is that something women go through after a baby?”

Martha: “Having a baby really takes a lot out of a woman, both physically and emotionally. Yes, there is a let down after the baby is born. For some women it is hardly noticeable but for others, it can be really bad! There can be a feeling of worthlessness and sadness. You didn’t know this, but I had a really hard time with that after Ruth was born. I was fortunate, though, because I had Mamma near by. She helped me through it. Hank didn’t even know that anything was wrong! He just thought I was cranky! I didn’t have any problems with that let down after Hank Junior and Chester were born, Thank God!”

Ray: “What can I do for her?”

Martha: “Be patient with her and just understand that she is going through a difficult time. She has gone through a lot in the last year, so it may be worse in her case. Let her know that she is not alone. Remember the little things. All the things you do anyway but make it more often! I will also be there for her. I will try to be closer to her. Maybe she could come over to our house during the day and bring little Danny! This will work out just fine!”

Ray: “Thanks, Sis!”

Martha: “There is one other thing. Maybe it would help her to have the Japanese girls she befriended last summer over once in a while on days when I can’t be with her. That way, she will be alone less during the week.”

Ray: “Thanks again, Sis!”

Martha: “She’s really lucky to have a man like you looking after her, Ray! You are a really good husband to her! I’m proud of you! Most men wouldn’t even notice that there was a problem!”

After leaving Martha’s, Ray decided to travel to La’Junta to get Livy a red rose at the florist. He realized that he had never given Livy a flower. Maybe it was about time! Fortunately, the florist had a beautiful red rose for Livy. He bought one red rose with greens, had it wrapped and then returned home with his gift! As he drove home, he thought about what the card should say that would accompany the flowers. About ten miles from home, it came to him. He stopped the truck and wrote the following.

“You are the queen of my heart
You are the vessel of my joy!
I LOVE YOU!”

Martha was true to her word. She came by the house often during the day to visit with Livy and to spend time. Livy and Danny spent many days at Martha’s house. Martha could see that Livy was getting better gradually.

For Livy, some days were harder than others and she was impatient with Ray occasionally but Ray took it stride because he understood. Ray suggested having the Nahari girls over during the week even though he was not totally comfortable with them since the POW incident. Livy, though, was pleased with the idea. Livy’s cooking skills were still improving and the dinners she prepared were excellent. The sisters occasionally visited during the week. Livy would pick them up on those occasions.
Gradually, Livy could feel that the sad feeling was lifting and she was thankful for that! It was March and she felt as though she had been walking in dark clouds and that at last the clouds had cleared and the sun’s brightness and warmth shown again! Her depression had passed.

As she looked back over the last two months, she could see how Ray had constantly been there for her. Her love and appreciation and thankfulness for this man deepened!
