Question for those who read the book.....

.....was "Ray" described as being THAT attractive in the book. I just watched the movie and couldn't believe Livy resisted him as long as she did. She's a rock! :)

It's been awhile since I've read the book, but Ray is described as slightly overweight, average looks, and thinning red hair. It was really a disservice to cast such a handsome "Ray" as one of the points of the book was Livy fell in love with him for who he was, not his looks.
Livy is also described as very plain.

They are both described as average to unattractive...
His combover/ attempts to hide his bald spot, stringy hair, etc.
Livy has a birthmark on her upper lip she tries to disguise with powder, and her sisters are said to be the pretty ones. I like the movie better because Livy is truly a beauty who had her whole future in front of her, "stuck" with Ray.

You are never gonna see a movie with ugly people even if the movie is trying to prove a point. What is the need in being overweight, balding, spot on lip, etc?

Wasn't it bad enough that she got pg out of wedlock in 1944? That her boyfriend was killed in the war or just left her behind?
and what was up with Ray? Why in the world would he have agreed to this?

isn't' there some question as to that? Obviously Ray had issues or was a widower or something! was wrong in his life that he would agree to father and marry a total stranger.

So you have a beautiful educated girl who makes a stupid decision and now her life is crackers and she has to make the best of it. She is living out in the boonies on a farm when she could be an archaeologist!

Ray was nice looking but was extremely shy and unable to meet women I guess.

What I am saying is, it did not take away from the story at all to have them be attractive because neither one was doing what they wanted to do. they were forced into the circumstances. In that case you can be beautiful or ugly, and it wouldn't make it better.

In fact, with her being so pretty, it made it much worse for HIM, because he felt inadequate and worse for her, because she knew she got caught.
But he was cute.
