In that barbershop scene where the Preacher is waiting to get a haircut, the little kid looks at him with a fearful/angry look. The Preacher has a thoughtful strange smile on his face. Seems like something was alluded to.
Is it possible the Preacher molested his adpoted son and other kids?
The preacher is remembering his own son, and possibly regretting how things ended between them.

Good lord! no, the preacher is simply looking at the boy and remembering his own estranged son. It is said in the film that they have lived in that town all of Mark's life, I am sure that father and son went to that same barber shop.

It's supposed to add to the mood. Not everything is as it seems, just because he's the town's pastor doesn't mean everyone likes him or gives a damn.
