The Neighbors (Spoilers...maybe?)

When Elizabeth tells her husband that the next door neighbors are a widower and his brother-in-law, I think I have a very hard time believing her. I think they really are a gay couple, and when she finally goes over to meet them it's because she's been thinking so much about her son and is finally curious enough to see what these neighbors are really like. It just seemed like from the expression on her face and from the words she seems to be choosing very carefully that she's not giving her husband the truth.

What do you guys think?

I tend to agree with this. I think that she knew that her husband would disapprove and she, by maturing and learning, has figured out that she must do what she feels is right, whether her husband believes the same or not. However, what I never understood was why she didn't go to Kure beach to see Mark.

You know I wondered about that myself when I watched it the first time, and the second time through she never actually says that she never went to see him (or if she did, my brain somehow blocked out that line). One of the last shots we see of Beth during her story line is Ruth bringing her tea out on her step, and then it cuts over to the scene a year later with her and Grace. Elizabeth then says something like "We talked about you before he died," so maybe she did go and see him before he died, at least, I'd like to believe so.

Several years before she had "outed" her son to her preacher husband, even though the boy had begged her not to tell.

She felt remorse, and by covering up the truth about the neighbors she felt, making up the story about one being a widower, she was making amends for her previous action.

I think it's possible to read it either way. She would get into more trouble with her husband if she lied, so it's actually more likely that she's telling the truth.

I think the dad and brother in law played off the Naomi and Ruth connection.

I have watched this movie so many times, and love it. This is the one thing I wish the director would of made a bit more clear. Maybe he did and I just did not get it. I want to AGREE with you 100%. I truly think the mom had begun to regret her previous decisions about outing her son to her husband. I love this movie, but, I do wish for a more happy ending in regards to the the two guys....and wish we could see the real mom connect with her son. Again, love the movie though.

Yes, I’m fairly certain they were a gay couple and Harper’s character was avoiding conflict by hiding the fact from her uptight husband. It’s never explained, but I didn’t really doubt the fact.
