Chabrol is the only director who 'gets' Rendell

I've seen many adaptations of Ruth Rendell's fine thrillers, but I have to say that the only films which seemed to capture her essence were this one, and Chabrol's previous adaptation "La Ceremonie."

Rendell is my favorite writer, but it's true that she often doesn't translate well to film - I enjoyed LA CEREMONIE and I'm just about to start watching THE BRIDESMAID - I'm looking forward to it. It's among my very favorite Rendell novels - the final 2-3 pages are among her very best, and the final revelation never fails to induce shudders.
