I'm confused about Riddick's eyes.

I thought in Pitch Black, Riddick said something about an operation he had so he could see in the dark. In Escape from Butcher Bay the furion spirit gives him the power. Can anybody explain to me why this is?

As we learn in the Chronicles of Riddick movie, he lied about his eyes. Jack/Kyra clarifies it for us by pointing out that she tried several legitimate and illigitimate (prison) sources to find the 'see in the dark' eye surgery only to learn it didn't exist. In Pitch Black it sounded plausable cause, first - it's a scifi movie set in the future and second - the destination prison planet was underground and unlit.

If you listen closely to the FMV at the beginning of the game, the voice of Shirah says "Interesting how one chooses to remember the past." After using the Pitch Black explanation for his eyes.

So in fact Riddick lied to himself about how he got them. He also said "I thought it was the pain talking, though it had always known its place before," in reference to Shirah talking to him when she gave him his eyeshine, right after Pope Joe stiched his arm up.

He then mistakenly attacks the Pope thinking he screwed up his eyes. Then almost immediately he sees that it's not such a bad thing to have after all when he enters a pitch black area of the game.
