What happened to his wife..?

...Lucy Stark? the schoolteacher?
I apologize if there is already an existing thread on this topic - I didn't notice any.
And I don't know if I either failed to understand some comment made in the movie which gave the answer to this question -- all I heard was that he was sleeping with the other blonde woman, and that he was 'two-timing' her, as well -- or if I missed a part, but could anyone tell me what happened to his wife?
