Do you think it deserves the 8.4 rating?

Do you think it deserves to be considered one of the best movies ever made? And what is your relation to the Indian region? Is it just Indians upvoting this movie? I really can't see anything great in it. The acting is terrible, at least by all the Westerners in the movie. The Pakistani guy was great but the rest were just comedy action/silly acting. The camera-shots are all over the place and some of the worst I have seen. Feels like a teenager filmed it or a guy who just started film school. The quality of the b/w scenes are not even mediocre it feels very cheap. The discussions are illogical, silly and stupid. They keep talking about being poor and broke and having no opportunities but they are clearly rich, popular and drink and party all the time. Gandhi is a much better film. 3 Idiots is also much, much better. Even Slumdog Millionaire is much better.

Its one my favourite films from the last decade. I think there is a void that disrupts the communication of the film's message to the western audiences who live in a much more systematic world (case for most Indian films). As an Indian, this movie evoked every ounce of patriotism in me. I find everything about it top notch....maybe I am more literate about the historic and cultural references in it ..and therefore it gave me more emotional kick than it would give others who are not aware.

It just barely gets a 9/10 from me. And I'm a caucasian Australian, as if that really matters.

When you rate a movie, shud u look at d rating and worry abt - "OHH..GODD! IT HAS SUCH A HIGH RATING!!! DOES IT DESERVES THAT?"
Or, shud u just rate d movie according to how u felt abt it, and let others do their job, and d rating come out naturally!
I think latter is d better choice.
When I rate a movie, my rating, doesn't even remotely get affected by d current rating of d movie, and d difference between my rating and d movie rating, if any. Thats d way to go!

Regarding ur comments abt d movie, d way we indians see a movie is quite opposite to how a typical westerner sees it. We indians are used to being engulfed by d movie. We mostly, go deep into d movie, wid d movie, wherever it takes - feeling it in its entirety( like a state of trance). A westener, on d other hand, sees movies objectively, judging it detail by detail, before he/she allows it to affect him/herself.
Its no wonder, why our opinions differ so much, and we rate movies so much differently.
And mind u, u can't really say for sure, that one way is better than d other!

Definitely an overrated movie; preachy, melodramatic, predictable, too long and with completely incongruent musical numbers... not to mention the abuse of slow motion. I noticed that at least five Aamir Khan movies were part of the top 250 at one point of another. I suspect this was driven by the studios or his fans. The only one of those movies that has any business in the top 250 is "3 Idiots", and that is being generous, but if movies like "Black Swan" at some point were part of the 250, I guess "3 Idiots" can also be.

I will never understand western viewers. They love run of the mill movies like Om Shanti Om, and hate groundbreaking stuff like Rang De Basanti. Go figure.

and hate groundbreaking stuff like Rang De Basanti

It's by no means groundbreaking. This is a regular young, confused party people finding their place kind of movie. It has been done a thousands time before.

Really?? Did you actually see Rang De Basanti? Did the subtitles even translate the dialogues correctly?

reply

It sure as hell does. Best mainstream hindi film of the 21st Century. Period.
