Is Raincoat a good movie?

You cannot classify this movie as a typical Bollywood movie-because it is not. It is a character study using the theatrical angle and short story style. In this way, Raincoat is unique. I think it is the best movie to come out of India in a while.

Raincoat is a flick attempting to come from a more art-based angle. Insofar as India hasn't produced many explicitly artistic films (recently, I mean), it's fairly unique.

Is it any good as such?

I'm sorry to argue that it isn't. At heart, it's still a Bollywood love story without the singing and dancing. The O. Henry angle is amusing but trite. I agree that the structure of the movie is a welcome departure from Bollywood cliche. But the insipidity of the story undermines any interest that structure might hold for me.

If this is Bollywood's current take on "art," I'll stick to extravaganza.

I loved the film .. and for me it was the best film from last year

ahead of Maqbool, Swades, Lakshya, Yuva and Veer-Zaara.

(I dont consider Main Hoon Na and Mujhse Shaadi karogi as good films)
(P.S. i also dont consider Raincoat an 'art' film ... categorizing movies as art movies is pretty stupid in my opinion)

Raincoat is one of the best films I have ever seen.

What a pathetic movie. People here are talking about performances and direction - what acting?? What direction?
The lead actors are stamerring - speaking in installments. There's no acting beyond that. Even the wonderful Ajay Devgan is in a sleep-walk mode. Aiswarya Rai - I'll be surprised the day she actually does act.
Sad and bad movie this.

& before you punch me - I do watch parallel cinema from India. This is just a retarded attempt by a director to load two main-stream stars into a failed attempt of art-film-making.

the writers of the movie were no question genious, the movie was beautifully written. there were some points that i was very bored w/...but after discussing w/ someone on this board, it was shown to me that there was purpose to the stuff i thought could have been left out ie: the banter b/t the ppl that seemed at first redundant. it was a beautiful film for the storyline. i've been told bengali films are known for that. the acting was a bit bland no doubt. it worked in a way, but then there were parts that were it was obvious that the acting was only to get a certain depression across rather than acting in a way that real ppl would act. ex: when asking question, one's voice naturally raises atleast slightly, which wasnt there in this movie which made that point obvious to me (there were others, this one just stood out). but it's no question aish's best performance to date, and ajay devgan has always imo been one of the more subtle actors in b.w so i was moreso pleased w/ the final result. i dont think movie would have worked w/ someone other than ajay devgan for his part.

I found this movie to be really great. It depicts a summer afternoon of ordinary middle class people in India. The pace of the movie is slow and the lead actors "stammer" when talking because that is the whole idea.

The movie aptly captures the kind of converstaion 2 estranged lovers can have if they meet after a period of time under the given circumstances. In real life we do not rehearse our lines, so the "speaking in installments" fits well especially if what we are saying is all a big lie.

Given their situation, they would not break into a song, they could not rekindle their lost lost again, they would not have much action in the house in one afternoon. Because that's real life for ordinary people -- a little boring, routined, with slow conversation rather than crisp one-liners.

Apart from these things, I was impressed with the placing and setting of the room, Ajay Devgan's aparent discomfort during the meeting, Ash's wardrobe, and her constantly fanning herself.

If you could walk into a house in Calcutta on a summer afternoon, you would find the same scene, similar looking people discussing a different story of their own lives.

Dear Shariqq

I am saddened at your comment and i also pity you for your non understanding of the movie. This movie has been appreciated by all people.

To me the film is a modern classic just like MONSOON WEDDING and DIL CHAHTA HAI. Almost everything about this movie is so subtle, so realistic and so beautiful.

One of the best indian films I've seen in a while..Kudos to Ash and R Gosh

Yeah man, so many people are intellectually stimulated with sensible cinema and don't have to resort to the commerical mind numbing stuff Bollywood churns out.

I thought this was a really great movie. Had a bunch of people telling me not to bother with it, but im glad i watched it and dont know what they were talking about, its so beautiful. The Gift of teh Magi has always been one of my favorite stories, and this is a great turn on it, Great film. Everything was superb, except for the ending, i wanted it to continue.

Its a lovely movie and it always will be. But i found traces of Ijaazat(Naseeruddin Shah-Gulzar) and Kapurush(Satyajit Ray) in it.... but the writing is still very good and the gift of the magi ending is the greatest O Henry inspiration. i'm a bengali and have seen almost all of r.ghosh's films; great director even if he's going a bit commercial these days...

i really like the movie as well ..the o'henry style of writing a script focusing on the characters etc was refreshing

I thought this movie was excellent. I live in America, but I have been drawn to bollywood movies because of the dance/music/art. I dont usually expect a good plot or storyline. Actually most bollywood movies are simply love triangles told in many different ways. They get boring really fast, but this one was so moving, it kept me facinated. I wish I could see more bollywood movies like this. The only ones I really enjoy are Raincoat, Monsoon wedding, DCH, and Parineta (although the ending of parineta had a lot to be desired.)

although it was probably one of the most artistically challenging movie to come from bollywood in a while, i doubt there is much of an audience for a movie which has 7 scenes tops throughout the whole movie, no songs and dance, and definately no glitz and glammer of the typical bollywood heroines.

reply

yes it is a very good movie so realistic n wonderfully acted by ajay n ash.
