Some Idiot wrote these names

OK, many of the first names of the the characters came from the population of Mayberry. Does anyone have information on the last names? "Sargentee" and "Macklehatton" are too contrived not to be jokes. Unfortunately, I don't get them. Anything on the DVD or any other insights?

Generally, not since "Pilgrim's Progress" have we seen names as apt(or clumsily obvious) as Some Idiot, Moe and Ron. I think they made the movie just so they could have a credit screen say "Writen and directed by Some Idiot".

That would seem like an enormous amount of trouble to go to, just to have a screen credit as you postulate. BTW, it's not 'Writen.' it's 'Written.'

I believe the names were a bit of fun.

McIlhatton and McElhatton are not unusual names in Northern Ireland. It's perfectly reasonable that over a couple of generations it would become americanised to Macklehatton.

The Northern Irish connection is more likely given that Mayberry is probably derived from Maghaberry, a village in County Antrim.
