Chicago isn't going to be properly appreciated here IMO, because the people who frequent imdb most are straight males who tend not to like musicals. Granted, I am a straight male who rates Chicago very highly.

I have not been a big fan of the recent best picture winners, and thinking about ranking them really brought that back into focus.

A Beautiful Mind (8/10)
No Country For Old Men (8/10)
Gladiator (7/10)
Lord Of the Rings: Return of the King (7/10)
Million Dollar Baby (6/10)
The Departed (6/10)
Chicago (5/10)
Crash (4/10)
(have not seen Slumdog or Hurt Locker)

Crash in my mind is without a doubt the worst film to ever win a best picture. I would welcome any suggestions to the contrary, but I don't know if I can be swayed.

Return of the King I think was the least deserving out of all the films nominated the same year.

I think Departed is perhaps the most overrated of all of them. It was a brutally snappy and fun gangster/cop movie, nothing more.

Million Dollar Baby could have been monumentally awesome, if the post-injury section of the film was done differently. It was just too ham-fisted, preachy, and overlong for me. Seemed to go the tragedy route for no other reason than for the shock/twist value and to create the illusion of depth, which seemed a bit cheap. Definitely gets my "most schizophrenic" award as I would give the first 2/3 of the movie 9/10. The last third gets a 4/10.

I know this stuff is all subjective but I am willing to wager that if you do ever see 'Slumdog' it will replace 'Crash' as the worst. It has to be the most manipulative, obvious, audience-insulting film to ever win the Best Picture award.
