a fairytale ending

When originally released ICO was a massive flop despite being critically acclaimed and damn brilliant. Its a game which worked on being good rather than appealing to its target audience (something i don't think EA will do anytime soon) and sadly was ignored. I found it iritating that a game that defyed conventions and is perphaps the closest thing on PS2 to art was simply tossed aside by the gun/car/killing only masses.

Anyone else happy for the team when its sequel/prequel reached No1 in the UK games charts :)

This game the PS2's Zelda, but should also be given the same amount of acclaim as Zelda to.

Thats a good point, i love both games to death. Zelda would just win it though on game play and life-span. But on atmosphere and feeling ico has it.

This game is amazing, why didnt people buy it, I guess they are all idiots.

its been re-released which is great and it sold a lot more this time round thanks to shadows popularity. woot!

reply

yeah, but the re-release cover art sucks pretty hard.
i think that may be part of the reason it did so bad in the US.
people look at a game they've never heard of, and the cover sucks... so they figure the game sucks too.

You actually hit the nail on the head there. Here in the States, I had never even heard of the game. Neither did anyone else I knew. I came upon completely by chance, because I ended up with a roommate (for one month) who had been given a PS2 as a gift, mostly for DVDs, and he had ICO because someone else bought it for him. I don't think he ever played it. Otherwise, I would only have heard of it recently, around when Shadow of the Colossus came out and the media actually talked about it.

And you're right on another count. The cover art does suck, if you mean the same art as on the original release in the US. In fact, that was the only release, we never even got a rerelease, so it's hard to find it over here. I had to score a used copy some years after its release, and now it hardly turns up at all.

There really was no marketing for the game here, though, so unless you read gaming magazines, which I did not at the time (didn't even own a PS2), you had no idea the game even existed, let alone what it was like. At least Shadow of the Colossus got the right attention, and hit Greatest Hits status, too.

yeah, i actually read about Ico in GameInformer [an EXCELLENT gaming magazine, honestly.] when they did a feature of shadow of the colossus, years before it came out. actually, at the time, it was being called Wanda and the Colossus.
in the feature, one side caption displayed a small bit about the game's predecessor, Ico. it showed the cover art for both the US and Japan. japan's unfortunately kicked our ass in the cover art for the game [i have no idea why they changed it to something so utterly awful.] but the editor who wrote it did so very fondly of Ico.
so, while i was running a fever one time, my mom took me to blockbuster, and i found a used copy for pretty cheap. so i bought it. once i started, i honestly did not finish, except to sleep and such, until i beat the game.

i agree, it's very fortunate that the developers decided to come out with a sequel and actually market it in the US.

they didn't change it to something utterly awful, they changed it from something utterly awful. it was released in the US first. Ueda drew the Japan cover himself and it wasn't ready in time for the US release, so we got a bs cover that was just thrown together. we also missed out on extra content that is unlocked after beating the game, such as a light saber type weapon that would get larger while ICO held Yorda's hand. and two co-op.

the japanese cover is actually based on a painting by Giorgio de Chirico.

I know! I'm looking everywhere for a reasonably priced Ico.

you probably won't see this as this is an older post, but I totally agree with you 100% this was very close to art on the ps2 and sadly it was forgotten about because of some other games that don't even deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Ico and Shadow of The Colossus, I cant wait for the collection on ps3 and Th Last Guardian. Team Ico is are the greatest game producers of all time.

Personally bought "ICO"+"SotC" PS3 "Classics HD" 3D double pack game even BEFORE getting a PS3 (some gal on IMDb just had made me believe these two were really good). It was in my table for nearly half a year (no PS3 to stuck it in). Then PS3 appeared. And now "ICO" is finished and "SotC" is before me to be played. No spoilers, please, but will the relation between these titles be explained in "SotC"? The main character looks like a grown up Ico. And the dead girl - is it Yorda? Do not spoil a thing please, just tell me, if further on in the 2nd game there will be an answer.

Yes, this is art. People who despise video gaming just did not have a chance to experience something like this.

It is something that makes you forget about television / radio / world news / pop music / serials / etc. for a long time (while these games are not easy to beat but very captivating).

And now regarding the topic - "a fairytale ending". If you enjoy a darker ending, you should quit during the end credits...
