Did anyone notice?

It was 1958 for gods sake. Fingerprints have been used in criminal investigations for identification since the early 1900s. Why would a sherrif pick up a cigarette pack possibly belonging to the killer with his hands. and then later crush it in his hands. As a matter of fact. Why didnt they ever take a fingerprint in this movie. Did anyone else notice that.
