Common flaw in DVDs?

So, I bought a DVD a few months back through Amazon. Upon viewing it, I found a flaw in the quality in the scene just after the "Loved by Mary Lane" song. I was unable to return it within 30 days, so I couldn't get a replacement, but I did get a refund. I promised myself I'd order it again the next time I do an Amazon run.

Here I go again, and I order the DVD. This one has the exact same glitch in the same spot! I'm tempted to suspect that Amazon just sent me the exact same disc, but the first scene is glitchy too.

One flawed DVD is just bad luck, but two flawed DVDs? That's suspicious.

So, I reach out to the online community. Has anyone who purchased the DVD suffered glitches in the DVD?

In theory, numerous monkeys with keyboards can produce Shakespeare. IMDb members prove this false.

Yeah, the same thing with me, but I am able to sorta fast-forward through it and it's fine. It's the scene after Mary Lane in the classroom, right?

Gah, you were supposed to say NO. So, apparently, this is a common defect. Egads!

Well, Amazon is shipping a replacement DVD today. The first scene was hosed anyway (the original I sent back did not have that glitch).

Hmm, now how can I get a version without any physical glitches? At least it's not during a song. Still...

Whew, well, I got my replacement copy from Amazon. I jumped straight to Mary Lane and watched the classroom scene intently. There were no flaws in that section. I haven't had a chance to test the rest of the DVD, but so far so good. Oh, well, there was one glitch where the sound cuts out during the utterance of "face" which sounds like they bleeped out a wholly inappropriate use of the F word, but I can live with that flaw.

But, the fact that I've seen this twice while someone else experienced the same may imply that there's a bad shipment out there.

I'm so confused...what classroon scene are you talking about?? I don't remember a single classroom scene in the movie except when Jimmy stumbles down a school hallway during "The Orgy", and which "face" line? Lol...thanks

The whole movie takes place in a classroom. It begins with the lecturer talking about marijuana just before the opening song. The story of Jimmy and Mary are portrayed in a film that is shown in that classroom. And the movie concludes with all the parents and the lecturer singing about using fear to control the masses.

I'm not sure how you missed the classroom. It was all throughout the movie.

I don't remember the line for "face" now. It was towards the end, I believe. I think it was when Mae and the President saved Jimmy from the chair. I just remember the line was obviously about "face" but the glitch just had "f---" which sounds like censorship (but this was a Showtime movie, so that couldn't be the case).

I didn't miss it, I just had one hell of a brain fart and was thinking just of the Jimmy/Mary/Jack/Sally/Mae storyline, strangely forgetting about the whole "movie within a movie" part when I typed that reply, sorry about that ;)

At least I didn't try to cover it up and say "I thought that was a lecture hall" or something lol

i also have that glitch where FDR says i supressed the urge to laugh in her face and the word face was cut out. i didn't notice it at first but i watched it today and i noticed he didn't say face. i payed it again to make sure and it happened again. after reading this i guess it does commonly happen to the dvds.

I've encountered the same thing, but I don't think it's a flaw. There's a lot of information on the disc (two films, three audio tracks on the main film, a featurette, trailers) so more than likely that little glitch comes where the DVD switches layers. It's not at all uncommon on dual-layered discs, but it's more noticeable on some discs than others -- and some players will smoothly play through the layer transition while others briefly hiccup.

Thank you for the follow-up.

I don't doubt what you say about switching layers, but the flaw I refer to was a severe digital glitch that lasted for at least 15 seconds where there was no audio, and the video was horribly blocky.

When I returned it, the new DVD did not have that problem. So, it's not consistent across all of them. Though, the fact that it happened twice to me would indicate that it may be a bad batch.

Nothing to do with the movie but I bought season 8 of SG-1 when it first came out (whenever that was), at Best Buy and all the discs were blank. I checked on two separate DVD players. So, I took it back and they gave me another set -- it was blank, too. I took it back, they gave me another one -- it too was blank. Took it back, and they took the last one off the shelf and checked it themselves (before they were to give it to me as a replacement) and guess what? That's right...it was blank. They refunded my money, and I ordered it online.

My point is: sometimes it's not the place you bought it from, sometimes it's the manufacturer's error.
