Masturbation Scene

I saw this film, some time ago...
Can anyone explain me the meaning of Ronnie masturbating in the car, at the end of the date...

Thank you very much for your help!

I think one of the best things about this film is that there are no obvious, simple answers for several of the questions it raises - why is the babysitter annoyed with Sarah, what exactly is the significance of the blue toenails - and this is another example. It also comes just as we may be gaining some degree of sympathy for Ronnie due to the way he's treated by the other characters and reminds us what he's capable of. And why he felt he had to take the action he did at the end of the movie to be " a good boy".

why is the babysitter annoyed with Sarah

I think the babysitter (Sarah's friend) knew about the real motive of Sarah absense... so she want the true from Sarah and not the "my friend is better".

reply

I think Ronnie acted the way he did in front of Sheila in the car because he didn´t want another date. He never wanted to date anyone.

If it harms none, do what thou wilt.

Ronnie still had thoughts about children, and dating Sarah was a way he could potentially put them to rest. But because she mentioned she was abused as a child, he became turned on.

But yeah, he was so fixated on the children's playground that he had to masturbate.

reply

Oh wow creepy. I wasn't aware of his fixation on the children's playground. No wonder everyone got out of the pool when they saw it was Ronnie.

Jackie played such a good role in Bad News Bears I hated seeing him play a pervert but he is a fine actor and played it to the max..think he got an Oscar nod.

reply

He was indeed nominated for an Oscar, but lost to Alan Arkin in Little Miss Sunshine.

I was truly upset for Sheila, she's had a hard life and isn't a strong person and she began to like Ronnie so it seemed that gave her some hope...then WHAM her soul is crushed from being exposed to his misbehavior. She probably went home and committed suicide. I understand Ronnie's mother knew she was getting old and wanted to find someone to care for her son but knowing her son is "different" and exposing an extremely vulnerable woman to his psychosis with no prior warning was a tad bit selfish.

reply

The mother was my favorite character. Still determined to help her son and even had ideas on how to do it, right to the end.

You could be right entirely so though to me it seemed there was something in her behaviour or in her way of doing that actually turned him on. He also spoke to her in such a way that a perpetrator could do to its victim, dictating and threatening her while getting exited because of it.

I think the theme of the film is that we all have indulgences or lusts that fill a certain void within us, although these are embarrassing to ourselves and we need to try to hide them. The lust, although we all find it sick, is Ronnie's attraction to younger children. Although he doesn't pose a threat because he was charged with indecent exposure, he just cannot contain himself when it comes to this. The reason for this is because he does not have a father to teach him how to date and act like a man. It is implied he was sexually abused by his father in a few lines, leading to Ronnie to do the same thing. Anyways, Ronnie could tell during the date that Shiela was a coil wrangle woman and would not say anything since she's quieter than a church mouse. Therefore, he found the time in the car an opportunity to relieve his lust by masturbating to a park he sees behind Sheila (as seen in the reflection of the window). The fact he had an audience got him off. Disgusting, but he's an interesting character.

I'm going to ask what is probably a dumb question: what is a "coil wrangle woman"? Or is that an auto-correct mishap? I've never heard that term before.

Where was this implied?

Um....what?! You're saying the reason that Ronnie is a pedo that can't control himself sexually is because he has no father to teach him how to 'grow up'?!!
The man is a pervert! He'd be a pervert if he had a father & a mother and 2 aunts living with him!
Having a father around has 0 to do with who he is & his behavior.
Ronnie is a sick man who knows what he's doing is wrong, he made his own choices.

I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.
Didn't he discover America?
Penfold, shush.

reply

I think it's a look into his mental issues. He's unredeemable and incapable of living without his mother's guidance. Here he is on a date with a cute, vulnerable woman who he seemed to be into at first, but while she's pouring her heart out, his demons take over.

Call them ISIL. Isis is an overloaded term that has many other legitimate uses.

I have another theory on this scene. As pointed out clearly in the end and throughout, Ronnie suffers from his pathological psychosexuality, also leading to his self-castration. In my opinion, when the woman he dates tells him about her unconsciously perceived probable abuse in childhood, he feels deeply conflicted with his past and her situation. In the car, she tells him that she has only met weird people and perverts when dating someone in the recent past, so he suddenly starts to masturbate - making a clear point to her, that he isn't what she would expect of him and wouldn't want to tell her of his past for feeling guilty. By knowing that she wouldn't ever come near him again for acting the way he did, she leaves in her car. Therefore, also saving her from the misery of his life now, as it is clear to him that his past is constantly following him through the eyes and actions of his environment.

He's looking towards a park when he's doing it. It's showing he;ll never have a normal adult relationship and always lust after children.

Never Drumpf! Never Hillary!
