Really?

So ... a man on his way to escape with his mistress stops and decides to play with some kids on a skateboard .... oh really?

Yep ... and there is no context that would make it ok ... it bothered me so much that I actually tried to justify it thinking that maybe I missed something but nope ... nothing can justify it!!! I even went as far as thinking that he did it on purpose to find a way out of running off ... but nope ... just plain stupid ...

Brad has a big problem with follow through. He also is unable to leave his high school past behind. He's seen watching the skaters when he's supposed to be studying for the bar exam; something he doesn't really want to do. Later he pouts because "mommy" won't jump and get him a cell phone when he wants it.

He's never really matured out of a high school mentality despite the fact that he's married and has a kid. The "escape with his mistress" business was a pie-in-the-sky idea that he had after scoring the winning touchdown and being with his girlfriend on the 50 yard line afterwards. He was never mature enough to make a decision and follow through with it. It is absolutely in character for Brad to stop to play with the boys on his way to escape with his mistress.

This is exactly it. Rather than merely being a spectator this time, the skaters acknowledged Brad which flattered him. He delayed running off with Sarah because he's stuck in that high school mentality, where acknowledgment from boys who had an existance he pined for was a highlight for him. Because of this and his perpetual failure to follow through, Brad thought nothing of making Sarah wait.

It's not like "running away with her" was a mature decision so I thought mothing of him impulsively skating with the boys. Brad's decisions are all based on him being terribly immature and living in fantasy land to escape his own shortcomings.

Brad was a fool. He just wanted to feel like something special.

I understood what the movie was trying to say re: Brad's immaturity on this part, but I found it a bit too much of a stretch. He goes from RUNNING to meet Sarah to suddenly feeling like he can stop and skate for a bit? He hadn't seemed THAT dumb prior to this part, so it seemed to come out of nowhere for me.

Exactly.

He watched them for hours, so I don't think it's that implausible.

reply

Because..he's a kid himself. And it ends his ability to truly escape...as it always has. Its a theme of the movie.
