Why can't I watch this movie!?

Ugh, I'm such a chicken. I want to watch this movie so bad but everytime I start to I get an awful feeling and have to turn it off. I've seen the exorcist, scared me to death and won't ever watch again, and I love horror movies but this is just to scary. I wish I could just watch the courtroom drama parts!

reply

It's no where near as scary as The Exorcist. It's not bad at all.

I just can't handle any possession scenes, when they start talking in another language saying they're the devil that's just way to scary for me. I used to watch this stuff as a kid but now as an adult with 3 kids I've changed, funny how time does that to a person lol

Then I'm going to assume you believe in god/devil and other such fairy tales? If I believed in the bogeyman then watching movies would also scare me.

This movie is not about a woman being possessed, It's about dumb people who "think" she is possessed but it actually just very ill. Which leads to her manslaughter.

Interesting point of view ADz-83, but it's just that - a point of view, so why not let others have their own point of view without spitting condescending venom? However, I feel I must mention that the movie would be titled 'The bullsh!t story of Emily Rose' if thats what they were trying to portray instead of what it's actually called, The exorcism of Emily Rose. So maybe take your frustrations at not being loved by your parents to a psychiatrist. If you believe they exist that is.

Excellent response. There’s a reason so many people get riled up by movies like this: darkness cannot exist where there’s light.

Everything in this person's post is disrespectful and immature (calling people dumb) and they think their opinion will hold validity?

I feel you wifey, I loved this film, it was the first and only movie to actually scare me as an adult. It's brilliantly done and the acting is top notch by all the main players. Since watching it I sheepishly admit to praying a couple of times after not doing so for about 15 years. It hit me that hard. I urge you to have a go at watching it, maybe during the day or with a friend if that helps you feel more comfortable because its worth it in my opinion. The story has substance and contains the horror without relying on cheap jump scares.

That kind of comment makes me very confident, in my personal view of movies.. I'm reading these comments, because I'm gonna see this movie..

Now The Exorcist, will always be my personal haunting.. The demon and the eyes of Regan haunt me to this date!! As a kind of selfindulgement into my darkest fears, I sometimes put on the Exorcist... And every single time, it gets to me!! That is extreme, considering the age of the movie, and the simple but so impressive effects needed.. There is no denying that The Exorcist has many people in it's grasp... What a masterpiece!!

Now, I'm gonna watch this and hope it conveys the story as honest as possible considering the sad story of Anneliese Michel.

Just watch it! You'll be glad you did!

I've just seen it..... And TRUST ME!!! It is not a tour-de-force like The Exorcist! It has a courtroom/documentary style to it with flashbacks... The images presented are more dramatic than scary... It is a dramatic thriller - at best!!

At the same time, it questions - as The Exorcist - the world between science and superstition.. While this movie gives the story of both sides... The Exorcist questions if there is something in between these two worlds - and leaves us with far more dread. The original Exorcist, has no "epilogueue" like the 2001 edition... And back in the seventies everyone was left with the shock!! Evil was not defeated, there was no salvation...
Emily Rose does so in a far more calm way... So the threat and questions about beliefs are somewhat questioned, but trust me - it's NOT scary!!

I rated this 6/10... I was expecting more.. Acting was okay, effects okay, a few FEW scares... But all in all I'm not very impressed.

What is the epilogue they tacked on to The Exorcist, please?

I watched this movie when it first came out on video. And I have never been so scared by another movie! I've seen "the exorcist", and in my opinion it's not as scary. I've seen tons of horror movies and they're not as scary. I guess different movies affect different people differently. But I couldn't sleep for a week after this movie!

reply

The exorcist is far more subtle and sinister than this film. Where there's the odd subtle look from the possessed Reagan, there's full out screaming at the camera in this film. I hate to think Americans are understanding subtly less so than 30 years ago

reply

It's not even close to being as scary as The Exorcist.

There's only one scene in this whole movie that is even remotely scary.

reply

ya but that 3AM thing kept me up a few nights lol.

reply

Oddly enough, I didn't find The Exorcist scary at all- but that could be that by time I saw it (in 2000), it's fearful reputation was so great that it couldn't live up to it. I saw this, knowing nothing about it and it creeped me out when I watched it alone one night...

I really dont understand you people who are saying this movie is much scarier than The Exorcist. I mean The Exorcist is without parallel and every exorcism movie since it (including this) always seems like a pale imitation to me. Not that its a bad movie but to me this was a court room drama with bits of exorcism horror weaved into it. it wasnt even presented in a way that is unrelenting like The Exorcist was. It gives you plenty of time for relief where you dont need to worry about being scared. Most of the movie is just watching lawyers play mental chess with each other and its not scary at all. This is a drama not a horror.
