What language are they speaking?

In the quotes section most people said they were speaking Russian to each other. I know Russian is spoken in the Ukraine, but the official language is Ukrainian. Both are written using the Cyrillic alphabet. I don't speak either language I couldn't really tell which is correct. Is there anyone - native speaker or student of - that knows which they were speaking?

Grandfather, Alex and the family speak Russian. Some people they encounter in the movie(especially when they ask for directions and the Ukrainians tell him to go back to Kiev) they are speaking Ukrainian.

So, if I understood well, when Alex picks up Jonathan at the train station and he speaks to his grandpa, he speaks russian.

And what about the scene when Jonathan says he is vegetarian and he receives a potato? In which language is it?

reply

Russian, unless the two languages happened to overlap a lot.

Its a common thing in Ukraine when people are speaking Russian and Ukrainian, we have here dialect that is called Surdjic.. its a mix of Russian and Ukrainian! Old people in countryside most deffinitely use this to communicate and its really funny to hear. One more funny thing is that people in Russia dont understand ukrainian language and when they come here its really fun to watch how they are tryinng to read bunch of stuff in ukrainian.
