If you liked this movie, recomend another....

I loved this movie, the visuals...the sunflower field, etc! and I'm looking for others with a similar feel

Can you recommend anthing? The list at the bottom of "if you liked this movie, you'd like this" seem way off base

I'm particularly interested in some non-American movies, just to expand my horizons and find something I might not have heard of before

I too loved this movie if you get a chance here are some that I think are interesting
Millions, Me you and everyone we know, Saint Ralph, The Prize Winner,
United states of Leland, Chumscrubber, and Pans Labrynth.
I don't know if those fall in the catergory your looking for but they are some good films.

I second "Goodbye Lenin" (German); it also deals with hidden family secrets in a somewhat whimsical fashion. Others to see that share similar themes (though maybe not so whimsically) are "Ararat" (Canadian-Armenian), "Burnt by the Sun" (Russian), and "Europa Europa" (German).

Burnt by the Sun is for sure the level of Illuminated, both stories about horror that celebrate life through beautiful nature, lots of sunlight and feelings of warmth and being positive. Needless to say that horror underlines all that beauty...
I am in love with these films.

if you are talking about the feel this movie gives then you might wanna watch a movie starring russel crowe called "a good year" ...

reply

I agree. This movie is so worth watching and unfortunately quite unknown.Directed by the hugely talented Ridley Scott. You will be hard pressed to find a better way to spend an hour and a half!!

reply

For gorgeous visuals, try Kurosawa's "Dreams"

reply

you can try the French movie "Amelie". it also has great visuals.

Come and See. Russian 1985 - Excellent!

I have to 2nd the choice of "Come & See". It is one of the most affecting World War II movies I have ever seen. It takes place in Belarus and covers some of the same issues "Everything Is Illuminated" makes. The destruction of entire villages is certainly covered. A forewarning - this is a very violent and real movie. There were not many special effects used in this production. Real bullets & explosions are used around the actors.

Paris, Texas has the same mysteriousness to it. The way the characters have mysterious pasts that you want to know about and you slowly learn more and more. It takes place in the U.S., but the director is the famous German director, Wim Wenders, and there are some foreign actors, such as Nastassja Kinski, daughter of the great Klaus Kinski. Also, the visuals are amazing, thanks to cinematographer Robby Müller.

reply

Great movie. Although the way their pasts are revealed is much, much different in Paris, Texas.

Laugh and the world laughs with you. Weep and you weep alone.
