Boston, second rate city

Lived there for 2 years, awful place.

NYC is far superior in every way. Enjoy the win, it's the only thing you people have.

reply

Second rate? Maybe, but who cares? New York City is the capital of the world. It would be foolish to compare Boston - or any other city - to NYC. But that's got nothing to do with sports, buddy-boy. Today, Boston is the capital of the American League.

I love it! You Yankees fans have spent so long convincing yourselves that you're better than us, simply because you happened to be born in a city with a successful baseball team. You defined yourselves by the Yankees success: you thought that because they were winners, that made YOU a winner, too. And now that the roles are reversed, you're faced with the inevitable conclusion of that logic: if being a fan of a winner makes you a winner, than being a fan of a loser must make you a loser. And that hurts, doesn't it? So instead of abandoning that logic and realizing that it's just a game, you have to lash out in anger. I FEEL SORRY FOR YOU.

The Yankees lost. Accept it. Move on with your life or wallow in self pity, but don't blame us.

reply

Ha, too funny. Unlike Boston, we don't really brood for long after we lose, since we have other stuff going on in this city. Perhaps some Yankee fans are still really upset, having tied their identity to the team, for me though it's just a team. I just really don't like the city of Boston nor its people, aside from most of the Irish and Italians -- they were good people.

Good reply though! Go Cards ha

reply

And you decided you had to tell us about your dislike for the city of Boston here - on the day after the Yankees were eliminated - because...why exactly?

The more you claim you're not reacting badly to a painful loss, the less I believe you.

Wait 'til next year, Morty.

reply

"And you decided you had to tell us about your dislike for the city of Boston here - on the day after the Yankees were eliminated - because...why exactly?"

Because it's fun to vent, and your side is gloating on various Yankees boards, so that's that.

"The more you claim you're not reacting badly to a painful loss, the less I believe you."

Umm, I only "claimed" that once, so your comment, "The more you claim", makes no sense. As for the "painful" loss, yeah it was an annoyance as we are not used to it as much as you people are. Enjoy winning this year, your team is breaking up after this so you can go back to your natural position of being also rans.

"Wait 'til next year, Morty."

Yes, when normalcy returns and your inflated team goes back to its natural state of mediocrity! We don't need to say wait till next year like your side does as we know we're not one win wonders like your team. Say bye to Pedro, Lowe and co, it will be tough for your team to even reach .500 next year. We should come back to this board a year from now, and when the Yanks are in the World Series you can return to your normal saying, "wait till next year".

reply

A year from now I'll be at the board for the sequel. Y'know, the one with the ending that boils your blood?

Gotta go watch the Pats now.

i love new york but i love boston ten times more it is so i dont know clean? lol not that new york isnt but boston is so pretty

reply

I went to New York last year thinking it'd live up to the hype, but it didn't. It was dirtier, trash all over the streets and it smelled terrible. People came up on the street (in *beep* Time Square for crying out loud) to sell me drugs and fake merchandise. Well, in Boston, the streets are clean, no one comes out of nowhere to sell you drugs, and you can walk through most of the city at night without fear. People are generally kinder in Boston (especially now since we won). All my friends who go to college with me in Boston from New York (I'm Boston born and bred) like Boston a lot better than NYC. I transformed people from Pennsylvania, Jersey, New York, and Texas (especially that guy) into hardcore fans just by showing them my insane passion for the most storied team in baseball. They saw me cry after we returned from celebrating at Fenway after Game 6 (myself and the whole world knew they were going to the World Series before Game 7 was even played). And they saw me repeatedly saying "I can't believe it" while sobbing when Foulke flicked that ball to first base. I've never in a million years seen a Yankee fan celebrate a win like I see a diehard Red Sox fan celebrate.

The atmosphere at Fenway is a million times better than the atmosphere at Yankee Stadium.

It isn't difficult to root for a team that wins all the time (although the Yankee fans never mention they're eleven time losers, a feat no other team has come close to). I've rooted for the Patriots and Red Sox my whole life, and early on in my life of being a fan both teams were terrible. I believed in them all this time and look at how I was rewarded. It makes it all the sweeter that we had to suffer to have our faith rewarded. (Also, you realize there's only two states that root for the Yankees: New York and New Jersey. Everyone else in the entire world roots for the Sox.)

The Yankee dynasty is over, money will not continue to buy you championships.

"I know now why you cry, but it is something I could never do."

reply

Oh by the way, we may brood, but it's because you never lose...until NOW! Now, I believe there's a feel-good movie you can see. I believe it's called "How to Deal." So go see it. You'll feel better, mortynyc, and so will we.

Well put Gotham... The Knicks suck. The Mets suck. The Giants Suck and the Jets suck. The Rangers and the Islanders suck, but New Yorkers will ALWAYS cling to there Yanks. A bunch of over-paid cry babies who can't even get along. The one thing you can take away from this movie is that the Red Sox Nation is real. It's family. And when a member of our family is struggling, we pick em back up. We don't trade em off so we can afford a Jeter or A-Rod. And by the way mortynyc, 1918 doesn't apply anymore.

um, you were saying?

i moved to ny from boston 6 years ago and i absolutely love it. no, it's not new york, in a lot of ways it's better, in a lot of ways it's not, but i can't imagine how you could have lived here for 2 years and thought it was awful. you probably didn't get out much.

boston fans are unlike any fans i've ever seen anywhere. i've never seen fans that are so passionate about their team, let alone a team that broke their hearts so many times! but "still they believed" and never gave up and dreamed of this day. i fell in love with the sox, i still hold a place in my heart for my mets but they just never excited me the way the sox and their fans have. even in ny i wasn't a yankees fan, to me, they always represented old rich republican men who have this sense of entitlement that pisses me off.

this has been the most amazing couple of weeks and i'm honored to have lived here during this era, to see all these people's dreams come true. i know how ecstatic and proud i was to see the sox win, and in the way they did, and i have only had to wait 6 years, so i can only imagine what it is like for those who've followed them their whole lives.

new york and boston are both great cities and both have their pros and cons. to say one is "superior" to the other is just ignorant.

2004, punk!

The only thing Boston has, you say? Have you heard of the Patriots? How are the Giants doing these past few years? How about the most storied franchise in Basketball History, the Celtics? How many championships have the Knicks won? Perhaps you also forgot about the Boston Marathon, which is considered far more historic than the New York. Oh, and don't forget the Boston Bruins, or the fact that Boston is one of the most active intellecutal cities in the world. I can't seem to remember the last time someone mentioned New York in terms of its scholarly atmosphere. Yes, I know you have great schools there, but nothing in comparison to Boston. Not to mention theres that pesky place in history that Boston holds as a key location in the formation of this country.

You obviously took a good deal of time to find anything out about Boston during your two years. Did you leave your apartment?

reply

It must suck liven in NY, how bout those Giants? Im glad I live in Boston and hate when I leave it

reply

Aw, what's the matter, mortynyc, afraid to admit the Yankees are losers? You know, when A-Rod came in, everyone said they would win. Well guess what? A-Rod STILL has not won a Wrold Series ring- nor even PLAYED. A-Rod is a loser, Steinbrenner is a loser, and NYC is a loser for blowing a 3-0 lead. I laugh.

Too bad your team broke up this year, no more Pedro etc. Perhaps the Mets will win this year if the Yankees don't? We'll see.

This whole post is ridiculous, I've lived within 50 miles of NYC all my life, and I really don't think NY and Boston should be so at odds. Both cities are so filled with culture and life, they represent some of the best of what this country has to offer, and even though Boston has less entertainment (in terms of plays and all that) than NY has, it is still a cultural haven.

I'm surprised at some of these posts. The Red Sox won in 2004, they broke the "curse" and they are the World Champions, they deserve it. However, some of the arrogance of Boston fans (which I understand should be directed at Yankees fans, for the way we've treated you) is a little over the top. Calling the Red Sox the most "storied" baseball team in history? Until 2004, most of the "stories" had to do with losing, and coming close. Boston is one of the classic teams in baseball, and has been around since the formation of the American League, but they are no more storied than many other teams. In truth, the Yankees are baseball's most storied team. They are the team of legend, the team of Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, and Mantle. Ted Williams is on level with those players, but no one else in Boston Red Sox history. Yaz is not in the top 15 greatest players of all-time, but those I listed above are. Even Boston's greatest all-time pitcher (Clemens) would rather be remembered as a Yankee.

I have nothing against Boston, and I'm happy for the fans (who I consider classy, and deserving of a title), but I think this whole celebration has been a little over the top. Most of the country was hoping for the Yankees to lose in the ALCS, and so they pulled for Boston. However, those fans can't STAND Boston anymore because they've become like us.

The reason Boston and NY fans hate each other so much is because we're so alike. Boston fans were angry when they found Yankees fans rubbing it in, and now they're doing the same thing. They also always said the Yankees "Bought" championships, and said when the Yankees lost in the ALCS, "This is proof you can't buy one." That of course, is a load of garbage. The Red Sox of 2004 were the most expensive World Champion of ALL-TIME! That's right, the 1996-2001 Yankees, who won 4 times in 5 appearances to the WS, were less costly.

The Red Sox payroll was the second highest last year (and this year, also) so to play the whole "small market, underdog" thing is ridiculous and untrue. And the whole anger against A-rod thing is ridiculous as well. HE WANTED TO COME TO BOSTON! It was the cheap Red Sox ownership that wouldn't pay $12 million more at the end. A-Rod said he didn't WANT that money, but the players' union said he wasn't allowed to just forgoe it. So do Boston fans show anger at their ownership? No, but at A-Rod. I would have been FURIOUS with the ownership going into last season.

Of course, now things are different and the Red Sox are champs. I think this shows how terrible an owner Yawkey was, because he could never win and a new owner does it within 3 years of buying the team. Boston always had great fans and a great passion for baseball, but they never had ownership to give them what they needed. Finally they get it, and win right away; it wasn't a curse that stopped them from winning, it was dumb Tom Yawkey.

This whole Yankees/Red Sox rivalry has really polarized these two cities, and it is idiotic. To be honest, comparing NYC to Boston is stupid because NY is a World-Class city and Boston isn't. That's not an insult, but it is true. Based on the population of NYC, it is classifed as an Alpha, Full Service, World Class City. You can go to Wikipedia and find out about how cities are rated that way, and see Boston's ranking, but the fact is that Boston is MUCH smaller than NYC. NYC has two baseball teams, two football teams, two (when the Nets move back to Brooklyn) basketball teams, and two (not counting the Devils) hockey teams. Boston has one of each.

How can people think NYC is clearly against Boston when the Yankees don't even own all of their own city? The Mets have a lot of fans too, and while the Yankees are the most popular team in baseball (which as a Yankees fan, I hate because all the bandwagon fans give us true fans a bad name) the Mets do well here too. This city can support more than one baseball team (and once supported three), and Boston can only support one. That says a lot about the size of the cities we're comparing. Boston thinks of NY as a Yankees town because they don't truly understand the idea of a city big enough to handle two teams.

I love Boston, but I'm a New Yorker. Massachusetts is a fantastic place, and I think that NY and Boston are more similar than us opposing fans would ever want to admit. I think we're both proud because we feel our beloved cities deserve more notice. Boston looks to NYC, and feels neglected. In many ways, NY is more set up to rival LA and other world cities like London, Paris, and Tokyo than Boston. Boston is a great American city, but not a world city like NYC.

I will close with an important wake-up call for Boston fans. Stop pretending that there are no real Yankees fans, or that your team is somehow more important to you than our team is to us. After September 11th, 2001 this great city of NY stood behind the Yankees and during the 2001 WS (for once) much of the country claimed to "be New Yorkers" and to root for the Yankees. Of course, looking back and forgetting how we felt in those troubled times, people now claim to have been ROOTING for the D-Backs. But it wasn't really that was back in the fall of 2001. Even Mets and Red Sox fans felt that NY could use a championship at that time. Don't pretend that because you've lost a lot, that loss didn't matter to Yankees fans. Your win of 2004 has no doubt meant more than the Yankees wins 1998-2000, and even 1996 which ended a short Yankees dought (from 1978). However, if you win again in 3 years or so it won't be the same thing; it can't be, ever again, unless there is another HUGE drought.

By the way; I think Chicago is sick of everyone from Boston thinking their team is the only one that went through such a drought. And not just the Cubs (who haven't won a WS since 1908, and haven't even BEEN to the WS since 1945), but the White Sox (who haven't won since 1917, threw the WS in 1919, and lost to the Dodgers in 1959, which was their last appearance). Those fans hurt just as much as you did, only they didn't come as close as you did so many times. Which would hurt more, always coming close and having it pulled away, or never even coming close at all? It is a tough question, but Boston fans don't need to think about that anymore.

"Well if you wanted to make Syrok the Preparer cry, mission accomplished."

Typical post from a typical ignorant New Yorker. tsk tsk tsk

How are those sour grapes tasting?

Mort, you need to accept that the yanks are declining rapidly. Last year at this time the Sox were 7 1/2 games behind the yanks and this year we've basically been #1 in the AL since the all-star break. Not only that, 23 of the 26 yank rings were bought before ***1977*** As in almost **30 YEARS AGO**
Having said that, pathetically trying to convince yourself that last postseason was just luck, just a fluke, etc. is incredibly deluded. Trying to say that a city as commercial and generic as NYC (not to mention smelly and unattractive) is anywhere close to touching Boston is ridiculous. You probably had the oh-so-common crappy/annoying attitude problem new yorkers have and THAT'S why people treated you badly. Same deal with you, sara, you probably whined "Yo, way-triss mowa cowfey" and were pin-pointed as a trashy sounding new yorker. Mystery solved. Move on and get over it.

as much as it pains me to agree with hollywood...i love Boston!

Nearly all of the world's leaders are educated in the city of Boston (and Cambridge). We are a very diverse city these days and i love that.

NY is a great city, i love to visit. but i don't think i would ever want to live there. it's not for me. too big, too cold (not in the literal sense).

Boston is smaller and i love that about it. I love St. Patrick's day in Boston, where even the italians are Irish for a day. everyone has fun, everyone goes out. even if it's a monday.

NY is for people who like to go clubbing and live the high life. i like hanging out at a cool bar with a great band.

We've got a lot of young, well educated (sorry but have to exclude you from this group hollywood) people here.

I love Fenway park, way better than Yankee stadium (how blah is that stadium?) although i will give props to the girl that lugged up a huge case of beer to the last row where i was sitting. they definitely don't do that at Fenway! but other than that what a generic stadium with a lackluster announcer.

I'll take crowded fenway with all it's charm anyday (Wrigley too! love that ball park)

Boston definitely has some of the best hospitals in the entire world.

Whether you like it better than NYC or you don't, well that just depends on your personality.

It's not that I hate New York. I just don't like the Yankees. I mean 26 titles is a lot, and they always seem to do it to us when it counts.
