What about Yo La Tengo? I think they'd sit happily with B&S.

Belle & Sebastian are my favourite band, but I also love Stephen Merritt and his projects e.g. The Magnetic Fields, Future Bible Heroes, solo is good too, try his stuff out and if you like that then listen to the 6ths and The Gothic Archies, his more bizarre projects. There are also the obvious choices of The Smiths and Felt, which are still in rotation on my cd player. Great stuff.

I Would recommend: The Essex Green and Camera Obscura

They remind me of belle & sebastian... and viceversa.
