Underrated...

Is it just me or don't these guys and girl get the acknowledgement they so rightfully deserve?
I have yet to be disappointed by a Belle and Sebastian-album...

And which B&S song is your favourite??

My personal top 5 is: (in random order)

Asleep on a Sunbeam
Me and the Major
Like Dylan in the Movies
Marx and Engels
A Century of Elvis (I just like Stuart David's voice on that track)

reply

I have to argee with you. I really do feel that they are underrated. I don't know if I can pick a favorite song. There are so many that I love.

reply

So hard to pick a top 5, but here it goes (in no particular order):

I'm Waking Up To Us
Dirty Dream #2
Jonathan David
There's Too Much Love
Lazy Line Painter Jane

I didn't include any from the new album which I have a copy of. Some great songs on that one, too.

They are most definatly not underrated. They sell out shows in every country, appeal to a wide audience and are alot better than teh crap that gets played on fm radio these days. They get the props they deserve, dont you worry about that. You are not looking in teh right place if you think that.

Top 5.. not that easy.. so i'll go top 10, also hard!

in no order -
Jonathan David
Le Pastie De La Bourgeoisie
Stay Loose
Waiting For The Moon To Rise
Don't leave the light on baby
Like Dylan in the movies
I'm A Cuckoo
Ease Your Feet Into The Sea
Roy Walker
Judy is a dickslap

there are so many other great songs!

reply

They're more underexposed than underrated. Everyone who knows them knows they're great and plenty of people do, but there's that whole radio thing where they're getting undercut. Oh well, they do just fine for themselves.

Top 5 (order changes daily)
The Model
Slow Graffiti
Jonathan David
Lazy Line Painter Jane
If You Find Yourself Caught in Love

reply

i dont think they're overrated and i hope they dont get more exposure, i know plenty of people who like them and I dont need to know any more.

top 5
Get Me Away From Here, Im Dying
This is Just a Modern Rock Song
Summer Wasting
Me and the Major
If You're Feeling Sinister

Last Film I Watched
Breathless - Jean-Luc Godard(9/10)

reply

They do not get recognised but they have a very loyal fanbase so there are people who appreciate them. Best B&S moment was winning on the Brits as best newcomer and being totally surprised all those years ago. And Stepps and Another Level featuring Dane Bowers (smirk) getting really really annoyed. Justice at last.

I am listening to them right now too!

Fav songs:

1 - Wrapped up in Books
2 - Lazy Line Painter Jane
3 - Dog on Wheels
4 - The Boy with the Arab Strap
5 - Tiger Milk

I also like the new album song "Sukie in the Graveyard" from the Life Pursuit. Isobel Campbell's album is great too.

There's even a pill now that lets men make love to each other!

reply

I don't think they're underrated at all. In fact, I would hate for them to get overrated... or rather, overexposed. I love them the way they are and who cares what the rest of the world says or doesn't say?

My Top 5 B&S Songs (of the moment):

1. If You're Feeling Sinister
2. Piazza, New York Catcher
3. Mornington Crescent
4. It Could Have Been a Brilliant Career
5. Nice Day for a Sulk

I tried to vary from album to album just for kicks. It was very difficult.

Honorable mentions:
Me and the Major
Like Dylan in the Movies
Judy and the Dream of Horses
Sleep the Clock Around
Simple Things
Wrapped Up in Books
For the Price of a Cup of Tea
Another Sunny Day
I'm a Cuckoo
Women's Realm
If She Wants Me

reply

Top 5 (excluding If You're Feeling Sinister as currently in the process of aquiring it):

The Boy With The Arab Strap (especially the live Coachella version on 'Fans Only')
Lazy Jane Line Painter
Like Dylan in the Movies
The State I'm In
Jonathon David

From what I've seen and read they get about as much acknowledgement as they want, however they surely deserve a lot more. I just wish they played all around the UK the way they seem to get all around the world.

I don't think they are underrated so much as just not all that well known. In the "right" music circles, they are extremely popular. I have only met one person in my entire life who has heard of them as doesn't like them, and this person is not someone whom I have any respect for in any arena, so it doesn't count.

It is one of the hardest things in the world to pick just five favourites, but here they are:

Get Me Away From Here, I'm Dying
Piazza New York Catcher
The State I Am In
Jonathan David
I'm A Cuckoo

(BUT THERE ARE SO MANY MORE I LOVE. Just had to make that clear.)
it's all too much for me to take - the love that's shining all around you [The Beatles]

These guys get me through work each day, I am spending the summer working in a pet shop so I can save rent money for next year. Each morning I start off with 'If You're Feeling Sinister', and then I just go for what I feel is right , I have been listening to 'Fold your hands...' quite a lot recently, it is hard to figure out, some people hate it while others love it, I think that it is a solid album with some wonderful tracks.

My Top 5 for today are:

Lord Anthony
I Fought In A War
Get Me Away From Here, I'm Dying
Seeing Other People
Expectations

"Me? I don't talk much...I just cut the hair."

I would just love it if B&S are underrated, overlooked and ignored.
Then I can keep them all to myself knowing they are brilliant ;o)
I definitely feel that it would be the end of B&S if they were a commercialised Supergroup (God forbid). Let's just keep them a secret to ourselves.
My favourite songs change all the time because a new one always seems to grow on me.

At the moment mine are...

Dress up in you
The Model
Expectations
The state I am in
If you're feeling sinister

reply

I found out about them through luck really; I've hardly heard anything about them in mainstream media (although that could just be me :P), so I'd say that they're underexposed, but yeah, not underrated.

Top 5 at the moment would be (in no particular order)

Funny Little Frog
Piazza, New York Catcher
I Love My Car
Dirty Dream Number Two
If She Wants Me

reply

I'm going to go ahead to try and pick five songs.

Piazza New York Catcher
I'm Waking Up To Us
Seymour Stein
Mornington Cresent
Wrong Love
