RULED, if you like dark comedy. I DO. James was awesome the ape was awesome. There are some scenes I laughed so hard I almost pissed myself. A must see.
Not just for people who like James, Though I think his acting was very free and spontaneous. FOR EVERYBODY!

This was so freaking funny -just off the wall. I couldn't stop laughing.
rent it.

I just watched it and I have to say that I absolutely LOVED it. It's brilliant. The comedy is stark and interesting - not the kind of grotesque comedy that you find in the teeny bopper chick flick movies that seem to be the favorite of society. It's genuine and although the plot may SEEM simple (simple enough: an ambitious young man trapped in the body of a bored old company worker who is sick of routine, vs. a primate), it's really not if you pay close enough attention; it's really about man's primal instincts vs. the expectations for man in society today. I definately recommend it. I was laughing 90% of the time. I am a huge fan of indie films because unlike most of the movies that America watches today, they tend to have more substance thank goodness.

Not sure what movie they watched but this was a trainwreck. Terrible everything. The movie forces everything and is far from funny. I enjoy dark comedy and this is not dark and certainly not funny. It is a horrible film that only hurts Franco's chances at ever directing again. Franco, whom I love, is bad at best, but that could be because he is next to a guy in a gorilla mask the entire film or due to the horrific dialouge. Stay away.

reply

I sort of agree. I like movies where I have to go back and think things through, but with this one everything was laid out really straight forward--plenty of foreshadowing. Plus Franco's acting created a really passive character lacking emotion, which would however fit his character so, i dunno. I did laugh on a number of occasions though.

The plot was basically non-existant. I didn't laugh a single time throughout the movie...not even a smile. The attempts to be witty were an utter failure, the dialogue sucked, everything was layed out for an unintelligent audience, nothing made you stop and think. It was unneccisarily disgusting at points, the ape was just irritating, and it was obvious that the ape was all in his head from the first scene onwards. The swearing was so frequent that it interrupted the flow of the sentences, and yet added nothing.

Unfunny, unintelligent, poorly written, poorly acted and poorly directed.

I like dark comedies, this movie is not a comedy, it's torture.
They could have done something with the basic storyline, made it an intelligent and amusing story, but they didn't even try. They went in the opposite direction with this movie.

Easily the worst movie I have ever seen or ever will see. It makes "Snakes on a Train" look like an intelligent, well acted movie by comparison.

obviously we can tell that you are a pretty miserable person from reading this comment. you sound like someone who tried to be a successful actor but gave up and went home how sad.

totally sucked

I thought it was really good. I went into it thinking that I most likely wouldn't like it that much, but I was definitely pleasantly surprised. I'm probably going to end up buying it.

James was great. But over all it was boring and sucked! Totally a showcase for James and not much more. Would have been better if it had either been a short or a stage play. Dull and too slow.

reply

i hated it. i didn't even finish it, i got about maybe halfway through it and had to turn it off. the acting was horrible, as well as the storyline. all around it was just a terrible movie don't i repeat, DO NOT. spend money on this movie, and even if it comes on tv or you find at the library even though it's free don't watch it you'll want your time back.

When do we see Jamie Lee's breasts? I wanna see Jamie Lee's breasts.-Stu, Scream

sadly, quite possibly the worst movie i've ever seen. how it got made is beyond me. atrocious idea, hideous execution... james franco seriously needs to redeem himself somehow after this heinous contribution to the cinema canon. and i'm (maybe i was? i was so appalled by this movie that i'm not sure anymore) a fan of his. do NOT rent this.

This was like the funniest movie I have ever seen. It's amazing!! The timing and performances and script is hysterical. There's no way to not be laughing when the ape is on the screen. Me and my friends had tears in our eyes. I'm buying it first chance I get!!

I will admit it was really funny, it was just messed up he went crazy in the end. I thought the funniest part was James Franco's first encounter with the Ape and when someone got a little violent lol not to give away any spoilers.

If a comedy is really funny it is surely a success

I liked it. It wasn't the greatest movie I've ever seen, and it didn't make me laugh out loud, but it was kinda funny, and it was different enough to hold my attention. Worth watching.

RULED. a psuedo-intellectual phony meets an primitive ape, and they kill each other! brilliant!

Yeah well, that's just, ya know, like, your opinion, man.

My vote is for ruled ;)

I watched it a few days ago and was more than pleasantly surprised - I was actually shocked. I haven't seen many films with or by James Franco, but from now on, I'll be on the lookout for him. He's not just a pretty face (which I noticed straight away, as everyone did, I suppose) - he has the courage to make different movies. And "The Ape" is VERY different. It's almost like an anti-movie, and yet-- it grips your attention, if you like things that are different. It was clearly not shot on a motion-picture film stock, perhaps just a VHS even, or digital; it did not have any pseudo-intellectual dialogue; or special effects-- or ANYTHING that would make it something made by Ridley Scott, for example. One word - it was everything that classic cinema is not. Beautiful and smart kitsch, I would say.

James Franco - bravo!

reply

There are just so many hilarious parts in this film. The funniest is when they're writing Franco's novel together. Oh my god.
