He's come a long way from Growing Pains

Back in the day when Kirk Cameron was the number one teenage heartthrob in
America as Mike Seaver, he experienced a religious conversion after attending
a church that a girl he was dating at the time was going too. He left the girl,
but the religion stayed with him.

Caused a lot of anxiety for the executives at ABC when Growing Pains had to
carefully write scripts that lessened the mischievious ways of Mike Seaver in
line with Kirk's beliefs. Kirk also had actress Julie McCullough fired from
Growing Pains from playing his girlfriend after she posed in Playboy.

I'm sure the folks at ABC wished they had a teenage star with the normal issues
of sex and drugs.

A lot of that self-righteousness is brought to this program which is featured
on TBN in the wee small hours of the morning. He must have been hard to take,
especially for the many gay people that he HAD to run into in the normal working day in the thespian profession.

Let me also say that Kirk and his wife Chelsea Noble also have started a camp for kids with cancer, a very noble (pardon the pun) thing to do.

In his own lights, Kirk Cameron is probably a sincere decent man, totally
incapable of thinking outside the Christian box as so many are.

He was a cutie back in the day of Growing Pains though.

What a waste, I used to think he was quite the hottie on Growing Pains. His
wife is from this area so Kirk and Chelsea come here every so often.

He's got an Aussie partner on this show named Ray Comfort. I'm hoping some of
the Aussies who post at the Passion Pit have some knowledge about him.

I was a teenager back then and loved the show. Kirk was a heartthrob alright! I had no idea any of this went on. Only in recent years did I even discover his involvement in Christian television and those Left Behind craptaculars. I simply cannot believe that he used his status as the heart throb to redirect the course of the show. Certainly, he should have stepped down if it was so bad and he felt he couldn't be a part of such things anymore. Really, I don't recall anything bad on the show to begin with, so why rewrite his character to be so perfect and angelic. That makes me sick!

" Kirk also had actress Julie McCullough fired from

Wow, the firing of his co-star on Growing Pains really sticks out to me as judgmental and typical of what causes so many to dislike Christians in general. It is perfectly alright for Kirk to have disagreed with what Julie did, but he had no right what-so-ever to exert punishment upon her by getting her fired. Jesus is well known for his statement, "let he who is without sin cast the first stone"! Excellent example of compassion there Kirk! It is situations like that where I wish networkd would stand up and tell people that there personal points of view have no place in dictating the course of their show.

"A lot of that self-righteousness is brought to this program which is featured

I have only caught the program a couple of times. I have a very low tolerance level for that stuff. It is like watching infomercials for the product Christianity that they are trying to "sell" to the consumer!

DFJ, he unfortunately was the Growing Pains show. All those little adolescent
pre-teens got their first taste of puberty because of him. ABC was unfortunately not in the driver's seat there.

But you notice how little work he's gotten since Growing Pains. Some Disney
movies, another syndicated series that didn't last. And of course two Left
Behind movies and this be Christian or else show he's doing now.

So whats wrong with getting work that you know or hope is doing something good, ABC should listen to him and have a show about christian, for christians, dealing with christian things. if not abc, maybe upn, no forget upn, they would make it into some crappy black comedy that no one would watch EVER. what sucks though is you can get most of the christian tv shows only when you have a dish.

Sorry, but that is what Christian Networks are for. If ABC did that, then they would have to do an all Catholic program, and all Budhist program, and an all Muslem program too! The viewing public isn't all about Christians you know. Kirk ahd no right to force the network to adhere to HIS personal system, nor did he have the right to exert his influence to judge and fire a costar for something they did. Talk about being better than!

Bruce, the money for Paul Crouch's new transmitter never seems to make it into the transmitter fund. Hmmmm......

Actually I'm kinda surprised that the fundie network and the Catholic network
haven't tried to get entertainment programming in line with their beliefs.

Call me crazy, but don't the fundies get a little tired of almost 24 hours of
non-stop preaching?

Jamie, with the advent of cable no reason why no one in the NAFTA area shouldn't
be able to get Paul Crouch and his network for whatever that's worth.

reply

Benny Hinn does that exact same thing. he shares horrible stories about visions of hell he has had, burning men writhing in pain and such, then turns right around and commands viewers to send their money via check, credit card number, whatever. These fools have no shame. What is even worse, the fools who are blinded by the head fool has bo brains, for they are the ones getting poor in exchange for some mail order miracles.

Why do you not like Benny Hinn, has he done something to you personally? Have you ever met him, sat down and talked to him, even shook his hand? What makes him a joke according to you?

Listen I am not the advocate dept for Benny or anything like that, even though you could come back and say that kind of thing. I read in the bible one time "that God uses the foolish things to confound the wise and proud" could you ever entertain the thought that maybe these guys are right. I mean I am not getting on to you or anything I am just asking. Look at it like this, Mr. Hinn speaks/preaches to billions of people each year through events and TV, he has millions of partners all over the world, now surely all these people cannot be wrong, I could understand if it was a handful of people like a small cult, (aka Jim Jones, etc) but when you are in the millions/billions all over the planet, there has to be something real going on, the shear numbers at least need to be considered, don't you think?

Pastor Hinn in Nigerian money row
By Sola Odunfa
BBC Focus On Africa magazine

In late April, scores of giant billboards and thousands of wall posters all over Lagos proclaimed the first of three days of divine miracles and healing for at least six million Nigerians - but at the end of the third day, there was more bickering over money than praise to God for mercy received.

The vehicle of the expected wonders of the Holy Spirit was the UNited States-based evangelist Benny Hinn, who flew into Nigeria in a Gulfstream private jet with a large retinue that included his bodyguards.

He was received at Lagos airport in a motorcade of Hummer jeeps and other expensive cars.

The deaf would hear, the blind would see, the lame would jump and walk, barren women would conceive, the jobless would gain employment, and the enemy - both seen and unseen - would be vanquished. Mention any problem - physical, spiritual, economic - Hinn had come with the instant solution.

But things did not go well.

Expenditure

About 300,000 people attended the event each night - a modest congregation by Nigerian crusade standards. It is estimated that about 1 million worshippers attend the monthly Holy Ghost Congress service organised by The Redeemed Christian Church God (RCCG) at the same venue.

Whatever disappointment he felt on the first and second days of the miracle crusade, Hinn kept to himself - but he opened up with anger on the final day.

"Four million dollars down the drain," he shouted into the microphone from the huge rostrum.

He said that he had been assured by the local organising committee that at least six million people would attend the crusade - but the total turnout was only around one million. As a result, he realised that all the mega public address equipment he had flown in from the US was not needed.

He also complained about some claimed expenditures, the charges imposed on pastors who attended his day-time seminar, and journalists who sought to cover the crusade.

He then announced publicly that he would not provide any more funds, and that the local organisers should pay all outstanding bills from the collections they made on the first two days.

Hinn's complaints instantly overshadowed the spiritual context of the event. Some people from the congregation came out to declare that they received healing and other miracles after the prayers, but they were hardly audible.

The Nigerian head of the local organising committee, Bishop Joseph Olanrewaju Obembe, accused other Nigerian Pentecostal preachers of sabotaging the crusade and peddling false information to Hinn and his aides out of envy, and to discredit him.

Soon after the crusade, a committee was set up by the leadership of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) - the umbrella body of Pentecostal churches nationwide - to investigate the funding controversy.

Big spenders

The Pentecostal faith in Nigeria is a veritable goldmine, judging by the opulence of most of its pastors.

It is made even more attractive because incomes of churches are tax-exempt. Nearly all the churches are the private property of their pastors or founders and their immediate families.

In an economic environment in which the majority of Nigeria's estimated 130 million population has been impoverished by unemployment, lack of basic social infrastructure and rising inflation, the church has become the last refuge for many people.

The favoured churches are the new-generation Pentecostal assemblies, that are owned and managed solely by fast-talking American-style pastors.

Rich and powerful Nigerians run after the pastors for "spiritual protection" from imaginary 'enemies' who, they are convinced, are lurking around the corner to pull them down.

These are the big spenders in the churches.

The attraction, perhaps, lies in the often-quoted biblical injunction that "givers never lack" and the fact that most pastors don't ask the donors how they make the money they give.

Devoted service

In March 2003, a cashier at a five-star hotel was arrested for allegedly stealing nearly 40 million naira (then about US$400,000) from his employer.

His colleagues were shocked because there was nothing to suggest that he was living above his means - he had no car and he lived in a rented flat in a non-fashionable part of Lagos.

The man confessed that he gave all the money to his Pentecostal church in cash and equipment.

In another case a bank clerk stole 40 million naira from his employer and gave 10 million to his church as 'seed money' in the belief that the seed would germinate and yield several fold as promised by his pastor.

Many Nigerians believe that a large number of pastors are honest and devoted to the service of God and mankind.

But they readily take umbrage under the Yoruba saying that "only God knows who serves Him truly."

I have major problems with charlatains like Benny Hinn. It pains me to see people mislead by people like him, who twists the very word to appear like some kind of miracle worker. One doesn't need Benny or his false teaching, which rarely comes from the Bible if you bother to truly pay attention. I do tune into him from time to time, but only so that I know what I am talking about. I don't bash a name just for the heck of it. The Bible instructs us to be aware of false prophets and false messiahs. There is more than enough evidence to support the accusations of Benny being just that.

I watched Benny a while back. He walked around with a Bible in his hand, but never ONCE read a scripture, instead the whole time making things up as he went. There is a big clue right there. Things should be based on scripture. I do not see the need for his inspirational stories, the exaltation that Benny receives from people, the pretty music playing in the background to stir people's emotions, nor his angelic white clothing as anything other than elements to make him appear all godly and angelic to the masses. Of course, the masses eat it up, which is why they end up acting like they do.

And what about that screening process that he puts people through before they are allowed to be healed? Some with illnesses are turned away. Pretty fake to me! The whole jumping around like one of the X-Men, kicking the power of Jesus into you isn't even Biblical. It is a show that people get caught up in, nothing more. This was all documented on Dateline NBC, yet many deny the evidence about his mansions and nice cars and such. Just like Falwell and the rest in my opinion! Oh well, empty those pocket books! He even sat right there and bared his soul on TBN one night about his horrendous visions of hell given to him by God, right down to a suspended in mid air burning writhing man consumed in flames. After this passionate story of the horrors of God from a teary eyed Benny who cares about you, his posture suddenly changed and he literally "demanded" that we the audience get out our credit cards and check books and give. Whatever!

Benny Hinn constantly offers mail order miracles, is that what your Bible teaches? Well, it isn't what mine teaches. Benny Hinn focuses on the miracle alone, but we are not to get so caught up in miracles that we forget what God's plan is really all about. Miracles, miracles, miracles, that is what makes Hinn his money from those who will believe anything. You cite that millions flock to Benny, but that is what is going to happen in the end with the anti-Christ too. He will pull fire from heaven and amaze the masses with his miracles. Don't be fooled.

Jim Baker is one thing, huge scandal that the world will never forget. But what may I ask is the problem with John Hagee & Jack Van Impe? Vision TV, that is in Canada, is that correct? I know that JH was kicked off Canadian TV for preaching against homosexuality, besides that what would be the problem with them...

Benny hinn just comes off as a fake, i don't know, just a feeling i get, i saw a interview with him in his house and it has alot of Gold

I know that JH was kicked off Canadian TV for preaching against homosexuality.-Nope he's still on Canadian T.V. he's on the Maricle Channel. besides that what would be the problem with them-Jack Van Impe thinks the world is going to end every week he beleaves the Rapture stuff(been watching the show for years same old)John Hagge beleaves Harry Potter is evil(it's a book that's not the Bible kids are reading it so?I have not read the books but come on)and they all seem to think Being a Conservitive is a good thing(all T.V. Fundies think this, and I am not being Partisan)I could go farther then this, this is just a snippet of stuff that wrong with T.V. Evangalists.
