An evil Marc Antony?

Why the hell did they make Marc Antony an evil man?

reply

Marc Anthony was a good man

reply

how do u know?

How do you know he was good?

He spent his youth causing trouble, and by the time he was twenty he owed several million dollars by todays standards. He had to flee to Greece to get away. He may have been good on the battle field but that's where he could have stayed... Mark Antony was an amazing general but that's all he was. He was a terrible politician, he left behind Rome to join Cleopatra not out of love but thirst for power, he humiliated Octavia who never did anything to hurt him and he fought in the civil wars because he actually believed that he could beat Agrippa despite the fact Antony didn't know how to direct a row-boat let alone a navy. He underestimated just how good Agrippa was on sea and in battle, one of his greatest mistakes... he was big-headed.

Octavian was an ambitious dude and Antony was ambitious dude without the brains who deserved everything that happened to him because it fitted her personality perfectly (unless you believe those lying Hollywood movies). Antony had it in for Octavian because he thought that he should have been named heir, that's why he came up with all of that pathetic propaganda. Propaganda is the most powerful weapon a man can have, if he knows how to use it.

Was Antony a great man? Yes (one of the best generals who ever lived.) Was Antony a good man? No way.

I think the HBO show ROME has a good portrayal of Antony

reply

Yeah, the Rome portrayal makes him seem ok. He has some boorish qualities, but he's played by James Purefoy who pretty much exudes charm so he comes off alright.

But, OP, if you think Antony was a good guy, you should read Cicero's Philippics. Obviously they are biased (just a bit!), but there's no smoke without fire (unless you're using dry ice).

LOL! Mark Antony wasn't a good guy... he was a bit of a git really. The way he's done in Rome HBO is very good, interesting and believable. In "Empire" he was the true villian but nonetheless the reason he did all of the things he did in empire was because he felt that Octavius was a waste of space who couldn't do anything... which is true, if I were Antony I'd have killed him too.

The Antony in real life did what he did cause he was greedy and selfish, he may have been those things too but in "Empire" you can at least understand his reasons for trying to kill Octavius.

Marc Anthony was considered the greatest general of his time(If he really was the greatest is another question), witch counts for a lot in a military state like Rome.

I don’t consider him evil or good. He was a man of his time, and as far as I know neither Octavian, Caesar, Pompey or any other of the Roman leaders(maybe Claudius) were particularly moral by our standards.

I agree that the Marc Anthony in "Rome" is probably the closest portrayal of the real man in any movie or TV series. He is cruel and self absorbed at times, but he also shows greater quality’s like honour and brotherhood( he goes to help Caesar in Greece, even though he believes it will lead to certain death for himself. He was offered a truce by Pompey if he didn’t go to Greece.)

reply

To be fair... Octavius was a waste of space in this series so, frankly, I'd have taken his stuff too if he was stupid enough to not keep his bodyguard with him. Antony was horrible in this (and badly acted) but you can see his reasons for doing what he did.

Mark Antony was a scoundrel. ;)

Maybe so but overall what happen to CLEO she was after all part of this?

Forgetting, how terribly inaccurate it was, not to call it pure fiction, including the depiction of character of Mark Antony, I personally think, that choice of the Vincent Regan was quite all right. I shall even say, he was the only accuracy of the whole series. If you take a look at the coins depicting Marcus Antonius - beceause there is no left any reliable staues of him - you will notice some physical resemblance. He didn't have such great scenes to play as you have in ROME series. The same Caesar. Colm Feore could portray him a way different, but generally , phisically he is more Caeasar-like than Ciaran Hinds.
I hope Hinds's fans and Purefoy fans won't read thisvcomment;)
Finally the third accurate person is Antony's wife, Fulvia - we do not see her in Rome at all.
