Carmen and the Housekeeper

I don't really understand the scene. Like why did carmen have to wake up because the housekeeper wanted to wash the sheets? How could the housekeeper Maria not speak english? Why didn't Carmen's dad talk to Maria, or really carmen herself? They seemed to both speak spanish.

I think Lydia (the future step mom) felt bad because Carmen said "I wash my sheets all the time, it's not a big deal."

She probably felt bad because maybe Carmen saying that made her feel like it was pretentious to have a hispanic woman (like Carmen) do chores for her. It was probably just awkward for all 3 of them in the room because Lydia is a white lady and both Carmen and the housekeeper were hispanic.
