IMDB Doesn't Like Black Films

They don't. There is no reason why Roll Bounce should be 4.5. Definitely 5.5-6.5, but 4.5 is ridiculous. I realize it's an ethnic movie, but the story is perfectly decent, if a little cliched, and the roller skating, I mean, c'mon, is just cool. RT clocked it at 66%, and c'mon, it's not exactly like it's hard to watch.

Maybe the majority of IMDb users are white, or something. Which isn't to say that IMDb users are racist. More to say, their opinions of films are disproporionately skewed.

Blame the people who voted. Imdb has nothing to do with that.

I agree with you wholeheartedly here.

nicholelibra is right we all have to vote.

reply

Yep, this no reason this movie should be rated so low.

reply

See, I'm an African American and I liked the movie. It doesn't follow the black stereotype where most black people do drugs and live in bad neighborhoods only to grow up and live in the lifestyles of the rich and famous. To me, it's a classic and deserved a higher rating, that's all I got to say.

reply

Look at the user-ratings. The arithmetic mean is 6.3, with a median of 7. That translates to 4.6/10 stars... how?

Seriously. IMDb doesn't like ethnic films.

The Barbershop series, the Friday series... all of them are rated lower than they deserve. I'm white, I have no racial motivation whatsoever. i've just noticed it, and it doesn't make any sense.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They break down who voted into sections. (ex. men, women, 45+ group, under 45 group, etc.) The average of the individuals break down to around 5 and from there the total is collected and averaged based on the number of groups. None of the votes were discounted nor were the numbers fixed. It all boils down to how people voted. If there is a significant gap in the votes it'll reflect in the averages. (300 something people gave it a 10, but at the same time 250 something gave it a 1 meaning that there is a huge gap.)
Looks at training day. Most of the people in that movie were black. IT is vodted high because it was actually good.
this has nothing to do with being black. this movie was just stupid. however, that is simply my opinion, which i am entitled to, as all of you here are entitled to say that you enjoyed it. i bet if you went across imdb site-wide, youd find that the majority of movies released (spiced black, white, latino, western, romance, etc.) are rated low. this is due to the fact that most movies are wastes of time. if the majority of movies were good, then we would like every movie and never have favorites. im white and friday is probably the funniest movie of all time, not because of its "blackness," but because it is simply a funny ass movie. also remember that to vote, all you have to do is click a button.....im sure theres people that just down-vote movies because they are lowlives with nothing better to do. such is life. im just tired of hearing people bitch about racism when something/someone doesnt agree with their beliefs. just because i think roll bounce is a dumb movie and that bow wow couldnt act his way out of a paper bag doesnt mean i hate all "black" movies, "black" urban culture, or black people in general. and just because the majority of voters thinks this movie sucks too doesnt make them racists. ill make this point...if you think that this movie deserves a 6.5, and friday is a hundred times funnier than roll bounce, then how do you show how much better friday is within the voting system? because friday certainly isnt a 10, but to rate it a 6.8 or a 7 when roll bounce is a 6.5 just isnt indicative of how much better friday is. see what im getting at? its all relative! thank you and good day, all.
reply
yea i agree dat imdb hates black films but roll bounce really did suck
reply
so true... the fact that movies like the color purple and do the right thing aren't on the top 250 is crazy. yeah, imdb ppl are pretty biased
reply
and most of our movies r in da bottom 100 or hav really low ratings
its not that hard to figure out wat an ethnic film is. a black movie is different from a white movie and an asian movie is different from a white movie etc. etc. idont care wat they think i just hate that good movies r rated so low.
reply
[deleted]
yeah, but movies like do the right thing are the "you either love it or hate it" type. i personally loved it but can understand why a lot of people don't.
reply
Could be cuz Nick Cannon and Lil Bow Wow are horrendous actors. O and Meghan Goode is far from a legitimate actor though she tries. Stop putting *beep* idiots in predictably stupid movies and maybe this movie would've got a semi-decent rating.
reply
i say people start rating white movies low.
reply
what is a white movie? every movie that doesnt star a rapper?
reply
i like this movie
reply
just imagine for a second if white people were as racial about everything as black people.
reply
Imagine? They already are but like to believe they aren't.
reply
I'm white and i loved this movie.. Stop trying to turn everything into a race war dumbass
reply
I think they do this with a lot of half way decent movies, especially if they have a non-white cast and writer/director. It's done on purpose to steer people away from really nice films, some of which have important information in them. It's also good to understand that some of the people voting may work for the movie industry. Their job being to discourage us from viewing these films.
Remember Hellyweird is a closed society, which most of us don't know the inner working of.
reply
I am white, and gave it a 5/10, although it should be around 5,5.
I could have rated it as high as 7/10, because I liked much of
the family stuff, but the young actors weren't very good, and the
main story was quite clichéd. An opportunity missed in my opinion.
I must admit that I generally have a low opinion of black american movies,
mostly because the general problem with them is bad to middling acting and
horrible scripts. They usually are quite entertaining though.
"I generally have a low opinion of black American movies"
Out of context much?
IMDb is really not that important, so calm yourself.
reply
I am black, and I don't even like most black movies. The only black movies that I can deal with are ones with substance. Most Spike Lee films are good, but when you get into films like Norbit, Roll Bounce, The Cookout....c'mon you can't be serious!
Also I have noticed that with a lot of movies that do have substance, black people don't want to see. When I saw Juno, I was one of three blacks in the theater. No Country for Old Men, the same. This goes for a lot of other films as well.
Most blacks seem to enjoy action and comedy flicks, opposed to films that you may find playing on the Independent Film Channel.
So I don't think it is fair to say IMDB doesn't like "black films", they like "films" that offer a good storyline, good performances, wit (not slapstick), and substance. That can be black or white.
Unless their slaves, moral and fun loving black folks arn't popular films. They don't make money. It was a great family film. It deserves a better rating.
