I think it was just a way to wrap up the story so that it would have a happy ending, and let the real Casinova get away, but leave behind someone to take his place. This movie had everything I don't like-- mistaken identy, chases, took much activity. However, as it happens I am reading a book whose story takes place in Venice, and I was enthralled by the city itself. That made the movie interesting to me, plus there were some funny parts. Heath Ledger is a wonder-- I saw him in "Brokeback Mountain", where he was a mumbling cowboy, but on the DVD's special features, he spoke in a polished English accent. He is SUCH a good actor. And SO goodlooking!

You mean "Pollished Australian accent"? There's quite a big difference between those two you know, and Ledger is an Aussie.

Casanova's on my 'to see' list; I'm very fond of Lasse Hallström. Good to hear it wasn't a flop.

Re. "Good to hear it wasn't a flop."

It opened in North America originally in limited release, then went wide after a month. If it gets to go wide, it usually means people like it. I know I did.

I figured the ones in power realized he wasn't the real Casanova so left the brother alone as he pretended to be him. The girls wouldn't know because techinally no one knew who Casanova was and I'm sure both the original Casanova and the later one never slept with the same women to many times.

Besides, if the inquistion was looking for Casanova, Pucci has seen the "original" version and when (as the voiceover says) rumors that Casanova had returned, Pucci and his posse would probably be looking for him, without any idea about the Bruni brother. Besides, he was married to a respectable woman of a good family with a modest name. If it was enough to protect the original Casanova before, it would have been more than sufficant to protect his protege.

Speaking of ending, I think it's ridiculous that the hero has to take on a bunch of supposedly experienced law men (ye olde officers in this film) all at once and beat them so easily. I guess then there wouldn't be a happy ending but oh well. All other parts were good
