Chinese policy

I just saw the documentary and I feel completely outraged by the Chinese approach towards the situation. How is it possible that these people are forced to go back to NK and they do not pass as refugees. The UNHRC is absolutely useless and was even questioned in the documentary as an organziation failing to fulfill its role.

"How is it possible that these people are forced to go back to NK and they do not pass as refugees."

It's really simple, China and North Korea have been allies since the end of WWII and even before that Korea as a whole has always looked up toward China. Why did the US/UN lose The Korean War? Because China got involved. China and North Korea both have skeletons in their closets and will help each other to hide them.

I am a Chinese. And I dispise North Korea. I predicted that the regime will be destroyed by their people within 10 years.

We Chinese joined them in the Korean war, and what's the return? Nothing. They now said they themselves fought the war. They destroyed all evidences we left there. Such arrogant b**ches. I don't think we and them are allies anymore, and if not for the strategic importance of the Korean peninsula, we wouldn't even care about them.

*Technically*, no one lost the Korean War...because of the armistice (so it hasn't officially ended). But other than that, I agree.

please don't listen to the two posts above, i think what's been said has been ignorant

i felt the same way you did when i first heard about north korean refugees and how the un did nothing to help
it's because the chinese are on the UN security council and with china's power, especially veto power, the UN cannot do a single thing

so far last year some north korean refugees have been allowed into the country with the pressure from the US.

i think it's ignorant to say that the north koreans are the only one's who are liars and etc. the only reason why china is truly still allies with north korea is not because of skeletons or wrongdoings from either side, it's because north korea is useful, the nation is full of raw materials that are valuable to the chinese and the economy in north korea depends highly on china. when north korea falls, it isn't south korea that will pick up the pieces, it is china that will. and for goodness sake, the chinese government has lied about everything it has done, it claims that it used to "own" parts of korea hundreds of years ago, and has destroyed all documentation that says otherwise in their records, they are starting to turn into another version of the japanese who disclaimed the rape of nanking, and what happened to all the human rights violations of the chinese? that's right, too many to keep count that no one bothers anymore, a bunch of lies, "oh they're illegal immigrants, oh, we were just investigating some taoists, taiwanese, buddhists..."

That's an interesting theory. The Chinese govt. might also have an interest in propping up NK since in contrast China seems more open, so it takes media attention away from their own unjust policies and practices.

Also, I wonder if the NK regime would be more likely to fall if the NK ruling class believed they would end up under China's wing rather than South Korea's, or whether the Chinese govt. believes that.

But I disagree that South Korea would just sit by, their people have had a strong emotional desire for unification since the armistice despite the economic concerns today. Also, there is a great deal of South Korean investment/trade with China right now, and China doesn't exactly lack natural resources itself.

As for the UN, I wonder if this issue is problematic for Ban Ki-moon right now b/c as a South Korean his pressing the issue could aggravate the political situation at a time when Kim Jong-Il is willing to talk with South Korea and discuss nuclear disarmament.
