Difficult to Watch.....

....but so worth your time. My heart is breaking after watching 54 minutes of North Korean refugees desperate for asylum in China.
Those who make it across are terrified of being discovered, because the Chinese government sends them right back to NK, where they are tortured, imprisoned or killed for "defecting." (a capital offense in NK, leaving the country is punishable by death).

There are a few brave Chinese citizens who try to smuggle the refugees to Mongolia (who are sympathetic to the refugees) but they are vastly outnumbered by the Chinese police and the military.

There are no happy endings, nothing is neatly resolved or tied up in a pretty bow.A very few manage to escape, but you are left feeling so sad about the millions left behind.....

some will try to flee directly into south korea, but it's a more difficult route. It happens everywhere and will continue to happen.

I saw this film back in 2005, and because of it started volunteering for Amnesty International. The problem was that I teach English as a Second Language, and North Koreans don't look very different from South Koreans, needless to say. What I saw on the screen were my students about to be tortured and executed-- students that I love.

Today I lectured to a class of 24 university students for Amnesty International and someone asked me why I had started volunteering. I told the group the story of watching this film, and just talking about it I started to cry, and I hadn't seen the film in 3 years. This is a very powerful film and if enough people saw it it could change the world.
