How gay is The Nomi Song?

I understand the subject of the documentary is a gay man, but is this film just about his 'gayness' or does it explore other subjects, such as the New York punk & art scenes?

On a scale of one to ten, how 'gay' is this movie?
(1 = not gay at all, i.e. "Delta Force")
(10 = very gay, i.e. homosexual porn)

Delta Force NOT gay? Puh-lease. Don't worry guy, think you can handle the flick. It's 2005.

"Look at my thumb... Gee, you're dumb."

reply

hahah delta force with chuck norris? lol sif that isnt a 10 on your homosexual meter. I would have said : (1 Not very gay, ie. Mr T stylez)

Such a bigoted question! The film is not "gay' or "not gay." It is a film about a person (and a very well done one, too). A person who was gay and has interviews with people, some of whom are gay. Art is not gay or straight. How gay are you on a scale of 1 to 10? If you answer is 1 or 10, there is some gayness at every level, no?

reply

Are you wearing your personal feelings on your sleeve or are you just jumping the gun looking for a gay-basher? I believe that donny23's question was a valid one from the context that he could have been looking for a good film to watch from that time period and not wanting to watch a film that is predisposed to any particular agenda. I can't speak for donny23, but I can speak for myself. I have several gay friends, but I am friends with them for who they are. My opinion of them is not predicated one way or the other on their preference. I would like to see this movie just to gain further insight into the time period.

reply

while it does talk about him being gay, that's only a small part in the movie.

"Who knows what you have spoken to the darkness, in the bitter watches of the night......"

ninthdoc--are you eally THAT naive? I wonder what your response would've been if someone had asked of DO THE RIGHT THING "gee, how BLACK is that movie?". Or "just how Jewi is ANNIE HALL?"

Get a grip!

reply

"a film that is predisposed to any particular agenda". Damn, you are nuts.

For the rest: yes, he was gay, no secret or big deal about it in this documentary about his life. If you can't take it, please crawl back under your rock.

Posting on IMDB is gay! What a bunch of losers. Oh wait I just posted! Oh well, maybe I'm 14 or something.

By the way, I don't have any gay friends! Can I still be cool? Shoot, I've got to find some guy friends who want to have sex with other guys so that I can be artistic and open minded!

Some people's minds are so open there brains fall out. By the way, the reason humans want to genetically have sex is for the continuation of the species, which is impossible if men are having anal sex with one another. By the way, just because we call it gay sex doesn't mean it is sex, because by definition it is not.

Oh man, I'm soooo un-PC! Dang, if only I could...force....myself.....

first of all, the original poster of this topic is a complete moron. I think we've established that.

This response I just don't understand. WHat does this have to do with Klaus Nomi? This entire post is nothing but completely unrelated sentences. And thank you for clearing up that whole "gay sex" thing, It was enlightening. Especially the part about "the reason humans want to genetically have sex". Did you even think while you were typing?

When I first heard about this film, I was immediatly excited. Not because I'm a gay enthusiast, because Klaus Nomi was a brilliant musician and performer. To come to a Klaus Nomi message board and assume a documentary on him is a "gay film" is a little annoying. The reaction you're seeing is the natural reaction of a Klaus Nomi fan.

No one accused the guy of hating gays {well, maybe they did, but you quoted me, and I know I didn't}, but as you can see, the general census says that "is this a gay film?" is a stupid question. Meanspirited? Maybe, but it's all in defense of the film's topic, which is KLAUS NOMI. Assuming this is an "agenda film" is assuming that that's there was nothing more to Nomi than a gay man.

and just out of curioisty, what does you being gay have to do with anything?

we're all very proud of you for fighting for your rights during AIDS crisis day. You're continuing to make this more about being gay, which is kind of the reason people got pissed off. And no I wouldn't have called anyone a homophobe. Like you said, the gay parts of this movie have little to do with the rest of the movie. So I fail to see how your accomplishments as a gay activist are at all relevant to this post or your defense of the original poster. Good for you, it's completely besides the point...

"You have simply extablished that you and your buddies on this board are the stupid, thoughtless and humiliatingly immature knuckleheads....not him"

first of all, I don't know anyone on this board, I'd hardly lump us all together as "buddies". And considering, no one's really responding except for me I can't help but take offense to this. I dont know if you read thoroughly but my initial post was 95% NOT about the first question. That comment was mainly to shut people up and make a statement about the poster I actually commented on {who I noticed you're not defending}. I'm sorry but asking if the Nomi song is a "Gay movie" is a stupid question. How did he expect people to answer that? We can't all be as understanding as you, Benji. Some people were irritated and offended by the comment and they had every right to be. This is a message board and if you come here with a question that could potentially piss people off, you should expect a reaction. Calling all of us "thoughtless and humilitingly immature knuckleheads" {colorful use of words} isn't helping your point.

Well said by a bunch of people who either did not see the movie or did not know who Klaus Nomi was before the movie. Also, kudos to the lack of respect shown for a true talent in his field. I think there was about 30 seconds of "gay" discussion in the movie. It's amazing how, out of an hour and a half of various topics, some people manage to only gather the 30 seconds of "gay" discussion there was. Talk about classic homophobe.

And punk, I don't think this movie claimed to discuss the punk scene.

And on the subject of art, I'm no expert, however, at that particular time in New York, there were strange and fantastic artists and displays all over the place. Most artists were a dime a dozen. It's sad that you seem to have looked to this movie for education on the New York Punk & art scenes. Perhaps try reading a book next time.

Well, I think this movie has its place if that's your purpose, but perhaps an even better movie to look to in that regard would be Edo Bertoglio's Downtown 81 (aka New York Beat Movie). It loosely profiles Basquiat, but even more so the NYC time and scene he was a part of.
