John Smith's armor in the movie.

Hi, :)

I thought the armor John Smith used in the movie looked cool and i thought of buying a set like that to the renaissance reenactment near one of my towns. Does anyone know what kind of style of armor that is used by John Smith, the helmet in particular?

Furthermore, when i looked on ebay, and such as, i only found armor in bright silverish steel color. Does there exist armor with a blackish tone, like in this movie?

Thanks in advance for replies. :)

Spanish Conquistadors did not have uniform types of armor. Most people of means paid what they could afford or else used armor that had been in the family for several generations.

The armor shown in the movie was simply period armor, typical late 16th style, often with crested helmets called morions. These were in use in virtually all of the European nations ... I doubt there is any way of determining national origin of armor without knowing the names of armor makers.

Thanks for the ino. :D Sorry for the delayed reply. :)

The Morion helmet is used by the other colonists. I was thinking more about John Smith's helmet. The one with the visor.

He loses it after the ambush in the swamp, early in the film. It was that kind of helmet i was thinking about. What is that type called?

I'm not all that certain that helmet with visor has a specific name ... it seems rather generic as late 16th century armor goes ...

However it is possible the helmet might be called a burgonet or a Burgundian sallet ... if you look up images of this type, you'll see them with and without visors, and with and without crests or just rudimentary crests ...

probably is a burgonet. smith was a mercenary before his trip to america fighting muslim corsairs in the Mediterranean. i know the knights of malta, who pretty much owned the seas of the Mediterranean in the 16th century, all wore burgonets
