Which cut does Malick endorse?

I know that Malick cut the film down to 135 minutes for theatrical release, but is that his preferred cut or the 172-minute version? Has he given any hint either way?

Given the likelihood of The Criterion Collection releasing a rumored 4th cut of The New World in the coming months (i.e.: next year) on Blu-ray/DVD, perhaps that will be his preferred cut?

Are you freaking serious??? I literally just bought the extended edition lol

reply

Yeah, I'm going to own quite a few versions of this movie by the time it's all said and done...

But if the rumor is true that this is a different cut, I'm okay with that. :)

It only cost me $10 on amazon anyway, what's another few bucks gonna do lol

oh really? I was about to buy the movie finally and if this is why they let it go out of print, I will wait for the criterion version.

Criterion Edition will be released on July 26, 2016 with the 172 Minute Cut.

Criterion version actually contains THREE cuts.

Malick's first, 150 minute cut, which was then shortened to 135 mins. for theatrical release, and a final cut of 172 mins. . I assume the longest cut is his preferred version, as it is the one actually restored in 4K, where the other two are just normal 1080p HD scans already available. The new 4K 172 mins. cut is the one with all of the audio and video restoration work done on it, and is the primary version of this release. The other two are included for completists.

There's also a ton of supplemental content.

THREE blu rays. It's its own box set.

This will definitely be THE definitive edition of this particular film.

My guess is the 172 minute cut, given that's the one the set prominently advertises and was the one to get the 4K Blu-ray transfer.
