I love the Criterion Collection release.

It has all 3 versions of "The New World", and the 150 minute cut will always be my personal favorite. It's the original cut, and the first version of the film that I watched in the theater, back in December of 2005. It is a masterpiece, and I'll always love it. I also love the extended cut as well. 

Thanks. The New World is my favorite film of all time. I totally missed that it got the Criterion treatment.

What are the commentaries and additional docs like?

Can this really be the end..to be stuck inside of mobile
with the Memphis blues again.

In addition to the movie:

The first cut contains:
Editors Hank Corwin, Saar Klein and Mark Yoshikawa (40 minutes)
The Versions

The second cut contains:
Actors Colin Farrell and Q’orianka Kilcher discuss Mallick’s style. (30 minutes)
Producer Sarah Green, production designer Jack Fisk and costume designer Jaqueline West (36:30 minutes)

The third cut contains:
Making the new world: 10 chapter documentary 1:21:00
And theatrical trailers.

All of those supplementary tracks are very good. However, 10 chapter documentary is really worth to watch because it shows how they built everything from scratch trying to be loyal to the original methods used to create those things in old times. You appreciate the movie more after seeing enormous effort, collaboration, and details behind the scenes.

The 10 part documentary was attached to the theatrical cut that was released on DVD in 2006, and I'm glad that they put it on the criterion collection. The first cut(the 150 minute cut) has the interviews with Colin Farrell and Q'orianka Kilcher. That is also really great as well.

The additional documentary is attached to the DVD of the 150 minute cut. It involves two interviews from Colin Farrel and Qorianka Kilcher. They describe what it was like working with Terrence Malick.

I just finished watching the First Cut of the film for the first time and I am aghast. I love The New World, it is a very special film to me. I've been wanting to see this cut for years but did not have access to it until the Criterion Release. I was expecting it to be different, basically the "in between" version of the Theatrical Cut and the Extended Cut. What I just experienced was in some respects a totally different film. I don't really have the words now to do this justice, but it is utterly beautiful and majestic.

The 150 minute cut was the original cut that was released for the Oscars, and it had s limited release in select cities for two weeks. I'm very grateful to be living in New York City, because I had the chance to watch it 3 times in the theaters around Christmas time. It was the best film that I saw that year in 2005. And I had to wait 11 years to finally own it on DVD. I'm very thankful to the criterion collection for releasing all 3 versions of this masterpiece. 

Does either the 150 minute version or the 170 minute version have the song "Listen to the Wind" anywhere in the movie? Because that song wasn't in the theatrical movie but it was on the official soundtrack. It's a very beautiful song and I'm wondering if the extended versions added it in.

reply

No, that song is not included in any cut.

Agreed. I had no idea that the 150 minute version was so drastically different than the other two. I have seen the 135 minute version 20+ times and was floored when I saw this the other night. A couple of point from my perspective:

1. I still prefer the 135 minute version. Maybe it's because that's the one I know and love, but I think part of the reason is because it's more visiony/stream of consciousness.
2. Can someone help remind me why the film was originally cut? If it was to make it more 'watcher friendly', I find it to be hilarious that Malick basically took a film with a straightforward narrative and made it much more abstract, instead of just cutting out 15 minutes. Sort of a middle finger to whoever wanted it changed.
