Ending interpretation

What main reason triggered his suicide?
Did he really commit suicide? He was saying these lines, "Am I dead..." right after, and then it showed a scene of him riding a boat staring wonderingly on front. What that this mean?
Most importantly, was he really in love with Louise? Did Louise knew all along that they were siblings?

For one thing, this film left a lot of plot holes that I think the directed wanted the audience to assume for themseleves. We don't know what sort of relationship he had with Mathieu, what happened to his real dad, why his sister was more bitter than his father, what Louise was even doing on that train with such little baggage and no where in specific to go? etc, etc.

Most things need to be interpreted by yourself with this film. In my opinion, I do think he committed suicide at the end, regardless of the boat scene. I think the boat scene was some what of an illusion of finally being free from life. He looked happy on the boat. After killing himself he did mention that "he would come back and be with his mother" I'm assuming he meant he'd come back in spirit and that he'd always be by his mother. Maybe the boat scene was him in spirit, satisfied with death.

I do think he was some what in love with Louise but i think it was more of how bitter he was for her 1. rejecting him and 2. stealing his friendship from mathieu. He sort of feels rejected from everything. He wasn't supposed to be born, his father/sister hate him, Louise didn't want him. Everything around him is dissapproving and rejecting. I think he was ultimately fed up. No I don't think Loise knew, but then again this was all just an opinion!

And do you know what my very first words were? New York Herald Tribune!

Yes i agree that most things need to be interpreted by yourself which makes for lazy film making. What do you mean by your very first words?
