Hello,

from a child's point of view, he may be a very positive character but when I look at him fron an adult's point of view, I have to slighty disagree.

You're right: He's encouraging the kids to not let their blindness hinder them too much (the "Suppenübung" at the beginning is a positive example) By filming them, he gives them hope (to ever be able to watch the videos).

On the other hand: It is very much implied that he knows about Herbert and keeps this secret. Herbert is a fugitive and a criminal and Mr. Karl is aware of him being in the school. He knows that the girls are hiding Herbert - and doesn't inform the police.
You might say that Herbert is harmless to them but he is not. There's that scene on the Autobahnraststätte and the truck. Although it may be nice that someone takes the girls out of a "too protected environment" so that they can have adventures outside, they don't need to be thrown into danger.
Also note that he disappears with half of the price money, effectively using one of the girls to get money.

I also kind of disagree on the "excellent movie". I like that it is a very honest movie and has blind children as heroines. It shows their everyday life and how they are not too different from "Guckies". Dying their hair, talking about girls, watching TV, liking and making music, cheating on exams, etc.
Yet I think that over all of this "realism concerning blind people", the actual movie falls short. It's not too interesting a plot.
