Hrothgar?

Why did Grendel not face Hrothgar? It obviously frustrated Hrothgar quite a bit after all in the movie he had slain a troll before so he would have at least stood a chance against Grendel. And yes yes yes I'm talking about in this movie not from the poem. But answers from both would be appreciated. I realize in the poem Hrothgar didn't slay Grendel's father.

grendel was getting his revenge by killing those close to the king, but not the king himself... yet. as far as hrothgar standing a chance against grendel, he didn't kill grendel's father single-handedly, he just threw the oil and the torch. his lackeys turned the poor guy into a pincushion...

Hrothgar is (for the period) an old man, with a urinary tract infection and a sense of self-preservation. His only option is to send others after Grendel; he can't do it himself, and wouldn't be inclined even if he were healthier, since he is Jarl, a cushy position of power.
