Chris Cooper was overlooked for an Oscar nom.

He was wonderfully subtle and brilliant. Eespecially that last scene which is haunting because of the look on his face and his line delivery.

No question about it. Chris Cooper was robbed of a well earned nomination. I use this as an example when I make the argument that Oscars are as much about politics and promotional money as anything.

really great in this. i agree. the one thing he has going against him. too talented. he so disappears into his roles it's hard to remember him. just his character.

Pardon me, would you have any Grey Poupon?

reply

What? You do realize ALL of them are actors, don't you?

such a loud ryan phillippe reaction to a cooper line! cooper is his role. he doesn't act it.

Well, he HAS won before, and sometimes that makes all the difference.
I do agree though, I thought his performance was better in Breach (and American Beauty, for that matter), than in his winning performance in Adaptation.
Such a skilled actor all in all.

reply

glad he won. didn't know that. very skilled. i agree.

Oh, and remember, next Friday is Hawaiian shirt day.

I've also seen the William Hurt movie about Robert Hanssen.

Chris Cooper isn't as famous as William Hurt, but he did a far better job with this character than William Hurt did.

Chris Cooper played him as arrogant (which Robert Hanssen certainly was) and a bit conflicting with his proselytizing Eric and Eric's wife while also wanting the door closed so that he could watch a movie that featured Catherine Zeta-Jones in it.

William Hurt played Robert Hanssen as nerdy and loopy, with an emphasis on loopy. They also portrayed him as being subservient to an over-bearing wife some of the time. Considering the power he had and the things he knew, I found it difficult to imagine Robert Hanssen being hen-pecked by a stay-at-home mom.

It's true that Bonnie Hanssen did catch him trying to write to the Russians after sending information that he claimed was worthless and that she got him to go to a priest to talk about giving the money to charity. I just don't think she browbeat him over the matter (especially since she wouldn't even consider a divorce or an annulment after he was arrested).

I think William Hurt tried to imagine what such a person might be like (religious and breaking legal and moral codes all over the place) and he thought such a guy would spend a lot of time eying the heavens piously when he wasn't arranging for a stripper to have a nice car and an American Express card.

Chris Cooper was better (and far more believable).

I totally agree.

He is an awesome actor. Recently, he was great in The Company Men nad absolutely hilarious in The Muppets.

I'm so excited, I think I'll brush all my teeth today!

Yeah he really stole the show here.

He balanced out the vileness and patheticness of the character perfectly. The whole movie, I jumped between feeling sorry for him and wanting to see him go down. And he handled the layers of him perfectly and made it believable how a Bible-thumping uber-Christian can preach the Ten Commandments one moment and then creepily ask his co-worker what his opinion of porn is.

I don't know how accurate the role/performance was to the real Hanssen, all movies take liberties, but it was perfect for the flow of the movie and I felt the tension the whole time in a movie with zero violence where nobody dies on-screen. Which is rare.
