hi,

i have been wondering the same thing. checked up on the imdb site bout it and found this. now "ugly betty" has just started in 2006, while jassi jaise started in 2003. got me researching and found that ugly betty is based on "Betty La Fea" which was a tele-series from 1999-2001(?). So probably Jassi is based on the Betty la fea series. creative swiping anyone ?

take care.

Doing an authorized remake or reworking of a story isn't exactly swiping. It's more like borrowing with permission. But I do think that the Betty story has probably been swiped without permission by other productions.

Although they're both based upon the same original subject matter (Colombia's "Yo soy Betty, la fea") "Ugly Betty" and "Jaissi Jaissi Koi Nahin," couldn't be more different. "Jassi" actually ventured into a lot of new territory that wasn't covered in the Colombian original because of cultural differences and also because "Jassi" lasted hundreds of episodes longer than "Betty la fea."

Now, I wonder why Jassi lasted so many episodes ? Probably because of the never ending slow-mo's of turning heads ! the same reaction to the same situation, captured by three different angles by three different cameras going in a infinite loop ? This alone can take up 5 mins of the show !

Plus, one thing which indian audiences just lap up is the "masala"ization of any thing. producers dangle a pilot or two in front of them, once they are hooked, there is no end to the amount of episodes (read as junk) they put on the poor dazed and fazed souls !

Anyways, to each "jassi" its own !

PS. Lizard guy - Didnt you just contradict yourself in the first coupla lines of your reply ? go figure ! cheers !

I would like to clear a few things up. I am a spanish speaker (parents from El Salvador) living in the U.S. and would like to clear a few things up for all. I love Indian films, actors, culture, dance, etc., and have great respect for all great things India produces or remakes. I don't know about anyone else but I enjoyed the I Am Sam (2001) remake Main Aisa Hi Hoon (2005). Perhaps it is because I like Ajay Devgan and Sushmita Sen but I thought it was different enough to hold its own. I won't make any jugements on the acting or interpretation "Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin" (2003)has chosen to take but I can shed some light on the origin. The original concept came out of Columbia and it is important to mention that the orignal story writing credits go to Fernando Gaitán. I watched first hand when the soap opera aired out of Colombia called "Yo soy Betty, la fea" (1999) and watched as it became a gigantically successful international hit throughout Latin America (Colombia, Argentina, Chile, Brazil,El Salvador, Mexico, etc.), the United States (spanish speaking part), Europe (Dubbed in Italy, Hungary, Bulgaria, & Romania, and certain parts of Asia (Japan,Phillipines). It was so successful a rival spanish speaking channel bought the rights of the original soap and created a sequel by the name of "Eco moda" (2001) with the same cast of actors. Germany (among others) spawned its own version called "Verliebt in Berlin" (2005) base on "Yo soy Betty, la fea" (1999)which is where Salma Hayek (A Mexican who keeps in touch with her country, culture, and media) a spanish speaking actor/producer who knew and has spoken in the media of how the concept and huge success of "Yo soy Betty, la fea" (1999) inspired her to produce "Ugly Betty" in 2006. In fact Mexico beat "Ugly Betty" by months with their own remake (giving credit to the original writer Fernando Gaitán) called "La Fea más bella" (2006) which is currently a big hit still in production which continues to air throughout Latin America, Central Europe, parts of Asia, and the U.S. I am currently watching this version as are millions of others who watched the original. We all like to make comparisons to the first but as it is filmed in Mexico is has taken on a different dialect (speech pattern as not all Spanish is alike), setting, characters, style, etc.. As I understand "Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin" (2003) was produced in the middle of all the succes of Betty. Of course put into Indian culture it will have completely different look and perspective of its own. Betty has evolved and broken many barriers by evolving into diverse languages, cultures, and settings. No matter where Betty ends up I hope it will continue to have the intended impact which is to look beyond appearances. In the materialistic world we live in we often look at a person as we do a book by its cover and not the content. I hope whoever if anyone who reads up to this point gained a little info. Take care.
