Am I the only one who DID NOT like this movie?

What exactly does everyone like about this movie? I LOVE dark comedies. I didn't think this movie was exceptionally funny, nor was it very dark. It was kind of lingering between a teen drama and a boring play. I just don't see what everyone else is seeing. Do I have to be canadian to understand the humor in it? I just think it could have been A LOT better. It wasn't a horrible movie, don't get me wrong, but its not going on my list of favorites anytime soon. Oh, and for the record, I thought the acting in the movie however, was really really terrific.

Do us all a favour and stick to viewing your usual type of American movies. I would suppose that you need to be able to predict what's going to happen and get confused when it's not spelled out for you. You wouldn't know good taste if it smacked you in the face!

reply

Jeez, give them a break. It was an honest question by someone who really wanted to know if they just didn't get it, and who actually had some nice things to say about it.

reply

well, the part about "having to be canadian" to like the movie was pretty offensive.

reply

I don't think that was pretty offensive - it wasn't a dis on canadians. Canada is a different country from the US, and sometimes there are differences in what one country finds humorous and another. It's just like watching a Japanese comedy, and coming away from it and wondering if it wasn't that funny for you because you're not Japanese.

I thought it was hilarious throughout. And wow sarah gadon was incredibly sexy. Even her potty mouth was super cute.

I'm Canadian and I did not enjoy this movie. I also love dark comedies, but did not find this film very humourous. It felt like a tired idea with stock characters. That being said, there were some parts which were quite amusing (the little girl reciting the poem) but it didn't feel like enough to sustain the film.

Just my humble opinion.

I really enjoyed the movie. My favorite line (I won't reveal where it comes, for those who have not seen the movie yet) was "I'm good with cars." I couldn't stop laughing out loud for a couple of minutes! There are several unexpected moments that surprise you in various ways. All in all, very enjoyable, offbeat movie. And delightfully brief! More films should be this efficient.

I just saw it tonight and loved it! Excellent script, exceptional cast, I really thought everything just came together perfectly and I laughed hysterically through most of it

I'm American and I got all the jokes, the acting was good everyone fit their role perfectly. Most of the series and films that I watch end up being Canadian when I wiki them. Most of the stuff I see is from western Canada BC. Also there was no wiki article on this film, that sucks. I'm not writing any damn article either because I posted on almost all the threads for this one so thats my contribution to Canadian cinema.

LOL

I may be generalizing, but it does seem American cinema has fallen into a rut...

Totally loved this movie. Points for originality and a great job by the cast and director.

I didn't like it. I don't think being America has anything to do with me not liking it though. I've seen quite a few foreign comedy type films that I thought were hilarious. This one I just didnt think was funny. It was disappointing to me. I looked at the box and they described the kids as "evil" and compared it to The Addams Family. That's an insult to the addams family and the kids were in no way evil.

I love dark comedies...this one was just silly.

This movie was pretty darn awful. I'm Canadian, and saw this at the Toronto Film Festival in 2004, and was quite disappointed. The acting, I thought, was terrible, especially from the oldest brother (watch the moment in the beginning of the film when he is jogging with his grandpa, and his awfully executed reaction to him collapsing) and the young boy. The problems I had with the film were its moments of cliche (the cute, annoying smart little kid with glasses who has the one-liners) and its terrible attempt at being darkly funny. The opening sequence was supposed to be hip with its rock music, but it didn't feel right. The mother and father were not even one bit funny... just so terrifying that you didn't know if it was supposed to be funny or not.
A woman in the audience at the festival said that the children were portrayed in the exact same manner as real teenagers. The oldest sister did a good job, but the rest I felt were lame. It was all too cheesy and felt poorly done (come on, walking up to Sarah Polley's window to masturbate at night. I'm sure everyone does those sorts of things). Also, Sarah Polley was there just for the sake of being Sarah Polley.

Completely agree with you satur9002 -- there are definitely better films that could have been featured at TIFF.

i watched it for Sarah Polley :D

"i watched it for Sarah Polley"

Me too and she was the best thing about this movie

All I have to say is his performance may not have been amazing, but still the guy who played the eldest brother delivers the single best onscreen vomiting that I have ever seen. Very subdued. Not at all over the top. Sweat on the brow. A twinge of pain on his face during the wretching, and all complete with spitting in the bowl post-expulsion; just to get that horrible taste out of his mouth. This is the sort of thing that cannot be taught in acting-classes. No. A vomit shot like that only comes from the actor truly experiencing a multitude of hangovers in his or her lifetime.
Truly Oscar-worthy.

I just didn't find it funny. It wasn't that I didn't "get" anything - I got all the jokes easily. I just didn't find it interesting or amusing, in fact it was fairly boring.
