Inspirational in a way.

Okay, let's get the obvious out of the way. Raptor Island is a piece of crap. 95% of the made for Sci-fi (or Syfy as they for some odd reason decided to call it now) movies are crap. People might say "Hey they're low budget". But low budget does not equal crap. Just ask Robert (El Mariachi) Rodriguez, Quentin (Reservoir Dogs) Tarantino, Richard (Slacker) Linklater, Spike (She's Gotta Have It) Lee or Kevin (Clerks) Smith. Raptor Island, like nearly all of the Syfy original movies, is a movie written by someone who can't construct a coherent paragraph much less an actual story, directed by someone who does not know how to direct and with actors who can't act their way out of a paper bag.

Yet it's also inspirational in a way.

How so? Because as a writer-director who's written scripts and made a few short movies I can look at it and the other doo doo on Syfy and think "I can do better than this." Because I find myself thinking of how Rodriguez made El Mariachi with the intention of selling it to the Mexican video market. In his book Rebel Without A Crew, he commented on how nearly all of the action movies made for the Mexican video market were crap. So he figured that he could make a good action movie on a low budget and sell it to the MVM and if nothing else, it would be better than most of what came out of that market.

Now here I am trying to figure out the best way to break into moviemaking as a profession. Thinking about Rodriguez and his original plans for El Mariachi I then got to thinking about Syfy's awful movies. Then I had a sort of epiphany.

Maybe the way in is to make a really good low budget sci-fi movie and try to sell it to the Syfy channel. If it's really good and they buy it, it could stand out. If it turns out bad it'll get lost in all the other crap. But if it stands out, people may see it as an oasis of quality in a desert of doo doo. "Who's this guy who made an actual GOOD movie for Syfy". So maybe THIS is the way in. Or maybe it's just a brainstorm I had. But I still think it's worth considering.

I completely agree.

After I recovered from the initial shock and bewilderment of one of the most unpleasant movie experiences I've ever had, my thoughts quickly switched to... "Hey! I could do better than this!"
