IMDb Ending the Message Board and Private Message Features

Not sure if everyone has taken the time to read the IMPORTANT message at the top of the page. In two weeks, there will be no more message boards or PM's.

The trolls have won. LOL

OR internet use has shifted to social media.

Ten years ago the community was pretty good at self-policing those who sought to sabotage civil discourse. Times changed.

I will miss having "one place" to go to hear the latest news or to express an opinion. There are other movie sites for discussion. IMDb will always be an incomparable resource for the who-what-when-where of the movie world. (Nobody knows "why".) 😜

See y'all around the interwebs!

Yeah this really sucks. WTF. You have any suggestions for a somewhat "one-stop" board to use for film discussion? Can't believe they're closing it down. The trolls, haters and others spewing vile filth on the boards definitely won. But they'll just find another place as well. What are they gaining really by closing it?

I'm something new entirely. With my own set of rules. I'm Dexter. Boo.

They are making it Someone Else's Problem.

We should probably avoid suggesting any other forums, if only to protect the innocent from troll migration. LOL There are obvious options that require no mention, though I don't know of any other forum that is as conveniently organized as IMDb. It's something to keep in mind and investigate.

Now's the time to archive anything we want to preserve!

Bastards.

This has been one of my favorite sites for years.

Where else can we discuss the latest conspiracy theories promulgated by the John Carter fanboys to tell us why their favorite movie flopped like a manta ray?

Requiescat in pace, Krystle Papile. I'll always miss you. Justice was finally served.

Disney forced the IMDB to shut down the boards as part of their corporate conspiracy to destroy the film! You can read all about it in convicted felon Michael D. Sellers' forthcoming John Carter and the Gods of the IMDB: Why That Bastard Bob Iger's Gonna pay For Not Hiring Me to Market His Movies.

So sad. Half the fun of watching a movie was the reading and joining in the commentary.

I am glad I took a look tonight so I could comment. What I liked about sites such as this is; they were confined to a few people with a specific interest. A few years ago the IMDb boards were an excellent place to swap opinions and ideas. Things have changed and the negativity has grown.

I may be the only person on here who has no intention of using Facebook or Twitter. I despise the whole idea of a wide spread social network with personal information plastered all over it. And the negative vitriol on Twitter puts this site's problems to shame.

George Harrison's album after the Beatle breakup was appropriately entitled: "All Things Must Pass". It's ironic that it has been my Avatar for this site.

I will always have fond memories of the Rodriguez, Conran, Favreau, and Stanton eras here on the board. This board was a special place for about ten years. Many visitors went out of their way to mention how civil this board was compared to many others. Things began to change about two months before the movie was released. Once "John Carter" became a widespread public topic, swarms of trolls arrived. Even then we had the lesser-known John Carter 2 board, but that got shut down after a couple years.

Makes me wish someone could set up a message board site for projects still in production, so that those who actually care about an upcoming film could gather and have more of an enthusiast-based conversation. Trolls really only start their feeding frenzy where there is either negative publicity for a film, which is typically only seen starting a few months in advance, or after the film is out and can be discussed openly. To minimize piling on by trolls, a message board for a film could be archived following the final opening weekend worldwide. And then further discussion could be held on social media and across the web.

Goodbye IMDB. Why else would I come here if not to read about scenes, subplots, interpretations, etc of a movie I just saw.

IMDB will become exactly that, just a database for which I have little use.

reply

There's not much else that I come to IMDb for, so I guess that's that and I will be
scarcer than thoat fur.

It will be a very sad day when the message boards disappear. It may be worth signing the petition to save them. It may not work, but hey it's with a try.
