Strange film...

My wife and I didn't even know this was supposed to be a comedy until we watched the behind the scenes stuff and that's what everybody kept referring to it as. I guess the humor is lost in translation or something.

I thought it's one of the most hillarious movies ever...I think the problem is not the language, since I do not speak the Czech either, but probably eastern europian humor is different from what people in the west are used to

Both of you are somewhat right, but the humor, themes, and subject matter are all Czech, like the comment about the cheap shoes from the Vietnamese, unless you live in Prague, you wouldn't know that a lot of the discount vendors are Vietnamese. Then there is the story about the house that was given back, and unless you knew Czech history it wouldn't make sense, or why did the guy's son go to Australia, which was due to the Prague Spring.
Then there is the whole racism theme, which seemed to be more Czech Nationalism than anything else, since the Czech Republic is a small country that has been occupied forever, so the Czechs finally are independent so they do not want a bunch of immigrants to come in and have Czech culture fade away, since they have fought for over a 1000 years to keep it.

Unless you are Czech, understand the post-Soviet sentiment, or have someone explain every situation for you, you probably will not get the humour.

Which is why I think this film was underrated by many outside viewers.
