Russell's Accent
Russell's accent was pitiful in this movie. Couldn't they find a real Brit to play this part?

Or at least get the poor sod a vocal coach...

Why you got the impression his accent was off I don't get. I worked in the City in the 80s and he sounded just right.

It was I kept thinkng 'is he ment to be a Brit and not an Aussie' and then the child version of him was perfect english and the uncle (the actors being english) I thought he was good in the role and he did a good non aussie accent in Gladiator but it did jar against the french and english characters.

I thought his accent as a Brit was bizarre...I gathered he was playing the snob upper crust Brit but damn, he just sounded way too affected.

Why would they get a Brit to play Max when they didn't bother to get a Yank to play Christie?
Aussies will do for both!
I have been asking the same question for years, only in regard to Hollywood constantly giving American roles to Brits, Irish, Scots or Aussies. Out of 355 million people, Hollywood can't find a suitable American to play Bruce Wayne? Come on.
The "American" accents of Clive Owen, Colin Farrell, Paul Bettany, Jude Law, and a host of others are all glaringly obvious as well, we've just been flattering you for years. Hollywood loves accents. We've been dealing with it, welcome to the club.

Actually, I'm English and I think Crowe got the accent bang on, but his acting performance (not his vocal performance) looked like he was trying to emulate Hugh Grant too often.
(p.s. - if Hugh Grant would have played this role, the film would have been crap)

It's funny I used to pile-on the scorn for the "English" accents done by some American actors and proclaim, "if they're determined to get a non-Brit, why the füc|< don't they just get a bloody Aussie?"
Then my brother pointed me in the direction of this film and I had to shut my mouth.
I wonder just how bad some "American" accents are when done by Brit actors. I know Clive Owen is terrible, but I always thought Christian Bale's was definately passable. Ray Winstone sounds cockney no matter how hard he tries, listening to him attempt a Boston twang in The Departed was just painful.
I english and I thought he pulled of the pompous, toffee nosed accent extremely well.

I am not British or a native speaker of English ( in fact I am an Arab ..) but I always notice Russell Crowe is lashed out by British people for his accent ...I think Australian accent is very obvious , even to "non-English " native speakers like me ...Certainly Crowe sounds very British to me ...
BTW , I am Egyptian and Egypt is the only Arab country that has a substantial movie industry in the Arab world . So , Arab actors with very diverse accents & dialects come to Egypt and act in Egyptian dialect most of the time ..We have no problem with that at all , in fact some of them are so good they can do the hardest local colloquial accents spoken in Egypt only ...and trust me Arabic accents & dialects are EXTREMELY diverse & versatile , it sounds like another language sometimes ..much more than English ..
