when his father called him

i was bawling :/

and it's weird because i laughed at his cynicism throughout the movie...

Whose cynicism - Jean Do's, or Papinou's? Anyhoo, I too welled up. Brilliant scene enacted so well by Almaric and von Sydow.

I give my respect to those who have earned it; to everyone else, I'm civil.

At the end of the director's commentary Julian Schnabel's last words are, "See you, dad."

He said that he made this movie to come to terms with his fear of death, and that his dad, who he was really close to, was also terrified of dying. I think all that emotion came through in that scene. Could not have been acted better, either.

reply

Yes, it was a very touching scene. The film is incredible.

reply

I think Max von Sydow is a great gifted actor for those kinds of emotions
