The Baxter is one of my favorite films. I recently saw The Apartment starring jack lemmon and I can't help but believe that there is a TON of influence on The Baxter. Not just in Michael Showalters name, but in the whole movie. Anyone else catch this?

Yep. Michelle Williams is fairly Fran Kubelik'd out in THE BAXTER appearance-wise.

and, especially the baxter's cecil mills (the too cute for words, williams) with the pixie hairdo of fran kubelik. both so vulnerable.
and the guys (lemmon and showalter) as goodniks among toughs.
any other similarities to mention??
